Misc / Open / How can two 10w40 mineral oils be different?
« on: August 06, 2026, 01:13:22 PM »
I recently ordered my oil of choice, Westway's 10w40 4T  mineral oil for classic motorcycles on eBay.  But this was not before I spotted something and cancelled in time the first order. I had noticed the smaller writing on the illustration that said it was merely engine oil, it turns out for the likes of stationary engines like diesel/petrol generators and plant equipment. Would I have been in much trouble if I'd to have gone on and used it?

There are some on this forum who seem to resent me posting stuff like this, they seem to think I'm sort of saying how clever am I?

Well, count me out, I'd say you're an inspiration if anything!  ;)  It is much harder for me to do a lot of things I would like to do though, not having a garage because I live in a flat and my bike outside under a cover. If anything changes that way I've always promised myself a lathe et al  :)

The frame mountings look ok so looks like I will be on the lookout for good secondhand one if anybody has one tucked away please?

I had this problem to the point where there was a split in the leg. After buying a stand sold as a CB400F stand on Ebay that didn't fit so wasn't of a CB400F and so had to be sent back I went to a car repair shop that did welding, they cured that and did some heat treatment before hammering into shape again. That was years ago and no trouble since, all I got asked to pay was a fiver. Nice guy!  ;D

The most exciting thing I've flown in was a Wessex helicopter with the door open.  8) That was as a soldier in NI, being near the border we travelled that way quite a lot those days. The nosiest but roomiest flight was in a Hercules transport going from UK to Gibraltar, however a five hour flight without a loo had it's own complications!  ;D

What I have considered now and then is a ride in a different classic, a Tiger Moth.  :)

I had a problem like this on a Suzuki GT380, in the end all I had to do was get new plug caps.

Before my biking days I used the Harwich-Hook of Holland route to go to visit family in Germany but that too is gone, I think cheapo flights and more airports and the channel tunnel caused that to vanish. If you use the Calais-Dover route back be careful nobody is hiding in you top box though! ;D

If I'm ever going to wear ear plugs it is to reduce noise from the neighbours I have here.  :o

The last thing I heard is that the two springs the push rod passes through can lose their strength over the decades but I can find nowhere that can replace them so far.

Does anyone remember this motor cycle that won’t fall over , a cleaver idea but probably extremely expensive but just what you need if you don’t want to put your foot down !
Probably went the same way as the Honda 400 automatic, we like changing our gears and riding for real!  ;D
