CB500/550 / Trouble with bike
« on: February 21, 2025, 04:47:17 PM »
Hi All

My 550 has sat for many months due to life getting in the way.

We fitted a new coils middle of last year, it ran ok, but was a bit lumpy and spluttered.  Put it away for winter and now it wont start.
It is at my Dad's, and I haven't got time to look at for a few weeks. He is only familiar with old British bikes, he has tried all the normal things, but can't get it to start. Battery is good, fuel is good. He thinks perhaps points.

Any tips and tricky greatly appreciated.

CB500/550 / Throttle service

My throttle is sticking, probably just needs lube, but I just wondered if anyone has any pointers, to get it smooth, are there any serviceable parts?

CB500/550 / 550 Fuel pipe
« on: November 02, 2024, 05:58:51 PM »
Hi all,

Please can some recommend the correct size and type of fuel pipe for my 550. Looks like the internal size is 5.5mm, but 6mm would probably work.

Thanks in advance.

CB500/550 / Cb550 fuel tap leaking
« on: October 24, 2024, 09:59:00 PM »
Hello,

The fuel tap I have on the bike has started leaking, not sure if the seals are replaceable? It looks new, and I was given a receipt for one when I bought the bike. Maybe it’s a cheap one!?

Please can someone point me in the right direction of a good fuel tap for CB550 1976 US import.

Weirdly on David Silver there’s no image, and it’s £61!!!

Thanks in advance

CB500/550 / Paint disaster / new colour
« on: May 31, 2024, 07:16:17 PM »
My Dad is kindly helping me sort out my bike and he took the tank off, and thought it was completely drained, and turned it over and some fuel leaked out and has destroyed the paint.

I was warned when I bought it that the paint on the tank may be iffy, but I didn't expect fuel to damage it this badly.

Anyway, lesson learnt, excuse to repaint it properly.

The bike is a 1976 CB550 US import, so it should have originally been Candy Garnet Brown I believe, but someone painted it black like a CB500.

So I'm thinking of perhaps going for Flake Sunrise Orange, which I realise is an earlier colour, but I think it is nice and bright.

I just wondered if anyone has had a tank painted recently and had any advice, especially getting the striping correct etc.

cheers!

« on: May 22, 2024, 02:04:53 PM »
Hi All,

I need some brake pads for my 1976 CB550, just OEM quality is fine, I don't need anything fancy, any recommends?

DS ones look ok?

CB500/550 / CB550 starting but won’t tick over
« on: April 13, 2024, 07:19:44 PM »
I’ve been having an issue where the bike fires and will rev up, and stay running if given throttle, but it will not tick over on its own, it just stalls.

Any ideas?

CB500/550 / Has anyone used these coils?
« on: September 23, 2022, 04:34:50 PM »
Starting a new thread, has anyone bought these aftermarket coils?

https://www.davidsilverspares.co.uk/CB550K-1976-USA/part_83533/

Ash said I should ask everyone as the primary coil resistance should around 4 to 5 Ohms, I asked DS this afternoon and they said they do not have this technical information!

CB500/550 / Changing HT leads
« on: September 20, 2022, 04:01:37 PM »
Hi All,

I have seen this discussed before, and it know it's not straightforward, as they are hard wired into the coil.

Is there a guide to replacing the HT leads? Mine are pretty knackered, so want to sort it out, preferably myself.

Bike is '76 550, import.

cheers.

CB500/550 / Handlebar grips for 550K
« on: August 23, 2022, 09:53:03 AM »
I'm after some new handlebar grips for my 1976 550K (US import), as the one on the bike are very soft and rubbery and twist easily, more so on left hand.  However the new ones below look like hard plastic? Were they originally like that?

I found an old thread saying non genuine aren't are long enough, an d I'd prefer genuine anyway, presume these are the best?

CB500/550 / Getting hot under the seat
« on: August 07, 2022, 05:48:08 PM »
Hi All

When riding in the recent hot weather the front seat area where I sit gets very hot. I've only had the bike since last October and so not ridden in this extreme heat and wonder if this could be contributing to it?

I had a problem with fuelling/carbs which was sorted this week, but that didn't seem to change the heat on the ride home.

Any ideas?

CB500/550 / Whine from Speedo or Rev counter
« on: November 23, 2021, 11:24:11 AM »
Hi All

So I have this noise which I think is coming from the speedo or rev counter.

I recorded it, this is decelerating from 50 to 5mph and riding slowly.

I guess the cable needs lubrication, any tips?
