The F2’s had a bit of a reputation didn't they Bryan. Wasn't it down to Honda changing the valve angle in order to fit bigger valves and try to keep up with Suzuki and their dohc 750? All the Honda engineers and designers had been seconded to the car division leaving the old 750 languishing with little or no ongoing development. The changed valve angle put a strain on the valve train as well. The F2 was nothing more than a stop gap until the dohc KZ750 was ready (and the CB900).

Yes James I remember both the bike and your post now.  There was some debate about the wheels fitted to the bike at the time, did you keep them?
Very nice job as always and a credit to not only your mechanical skills but also to your dedication to finding the parts to restore the bike. Love the paint colour, Honda missed a trick there back in the day 8).
I went to see my stored Rickman CR750 a few weeks ago up in Glasgow. Its a sorry mess and is going to take some serious elbow grease and a large wad to bring it back to life. Maybe after the NC30 who knows ???

Google, I asked the question 'How are Honda rectifying the 1000 Hornet engine oil consumption issues' and that was the answer. I had heard the same thing on a youtube post a few weeks ago.
Of course the information a manufacturer releases to the press can differ from real life, just ask KTM who blamed the owners of their bikes for the terrible cam wear that was proved to be the result of poor design, manufacture and QA of the parts and still they denied it.
From what people are saying on Pistonheads it would appear Honda Japan are maybe failing to get the message across to Honda UK. If Honda fail to act and address this issue quickly their reputation will only go one way.
If it is down to pistons and rings that would be very bad news considering Mr Honda himself made his name making piston rings in the 1940's/50's and founded the Honda company as a result.
As an aside, where is the 1000 Hornet engine made? You never know these days as motorcycle manufacture is so global along with everything else, for instance I thought the new Norton V4 engine was UK manufactured but no, it's made in India. Back in the day of the old Norton V4 (Stuart Garner era) I was told the engine was designed in the UK but made in China along with the never to be seen Atlas 650 motor.
When you consider how engine design and manufacture has evolved since the days of rattly 500/750 twins and the level of sophistication where it is now it only takes a bad batch of something to bring it all down and especially as news travels so fast these days. Back in the late 70's I used to take a litre of oil with me when out on my 250CSR Matchless, it would burn through or throw out 1/2 litre every 100 miles!

Looking great James and you can park directly outside the cafe to keep an eye on it👍
What is the story with this bike then and especially the paint colour and name?

From the interweb......
Honda has initiated a global recall for affected CB1000 Hornet and SP models to address excessive oil consumption caused by out-of-specification pistons and piston rings. The manufacturer is implementing a permanent fix by replacing the faulty pistons and piston rings to resolve the issue.Affected riders are being contacted directly by local dealerships to arrange for the corrective engine service

At least honda to their credit acknowledged the problem as soon as it was known about and did something to rectify it unlike KTM who just ignored the engine issues or their bikes and did nothing about it until they were forced to (by going bust). Personally I'd never buy a KTM after the way they behaved. The bikes affected had the Chinese made engine and that itself is a red flag for me regarding Chinese bikes. How good is their quality coupled with the poor resale value and lack of dealers especially considering how many Chinese bike brands are out there now.

I fancied a stock MT, but I’m not too kenn on the 26 colour schemes. I had considered the new CB 1000 Hornet, but they seem to have a serious engine issue re excessive oil consumption.

Apparently that's been cured now. Honda say it was a bad batch of pistons & rings. They've recalled all the bikes affected, they can't afford another VF750 debacle!

I've still got my Kett leather jacket I bought when I was 17 and first started biking on my CB160. It was a 38inch chest, a bit on the small side now considering I do a daily workout with my Bullworker (although sometimes I do struggle to get it out of the box) 😳. Some things you just can't throw away.

My choice of attire on days like these (and I'm out on the RE Interceptor at the moment, just stopped off in Burnham Beeches for a bacon bap and a latte) is a pair of Red Route denim jeans for bikers with AA hip and knee armour (about £100 three years ago and purchased from J&S) and a light grey Oxford Arizona Air jacket (A rated) cost around £140 last year with a AAA rated back protector that was another £35. The jacket is a godsend, fits like a glove and allows plenty of airflow. I don't feel the back protector as it's the latest lightweight type and not the heavy, solid inflexible plastic of years gone by. Boots are short length Daytona and fitted fine straight out of the box with no painful breaking in.
I wear all this gear but the thousands of half witted scooter riders that swam everywhere in London ride in shorts, tees, flip flops and no gloves and that's just not in summer either!
As for Scott leathers, they unfortunately folded a month or so ago with the owner saying it was because of the cheap leathers now coming in from the far east.

Welcome to the forum Dave. I also have a K6 (engine, in a Rickman frame...... somewhere!).
Being a Dave you are probably busy thinking about joining the other Dave's and getting a 400/4, a yellow one (others on here will know why it has to be yellow) because that's what Dave's do🙂.

Tricks & Tips / Re: Spark plug stuck-corroded-broken.
« on: July 05, 2026, 08:27:00 PM »
Just caught up with this thread. Very interesting Nigel. Starting spark plugs off in an old thread can be a bit fraught especially when they are deep set and at an angle. I tend to use my fingers (or a length of rubber tube on the end of the plug) to get a feel for the plug starting in the thread before using a socket.
