Project Board / Oil Pressure Gauge
« on: June 10, 2026, 10:15:38 PM »
Recently fitted a mechanical Oil pressure Gauge whilst retaining the oil light. The original oil sensor switch was failing wasn't coming on till hot, and what with the oil pump needing priming after the engine rebuild, I thought I'd try replicate the setup I had with my first CB750. An 1/8 bspt adapter with thread sealant and a bsp T piece worked good.  I'm getting about 70 lb/in cruising speed drops to about 20 lb/in psi at idle in traffic which was an eye opener.. but I would think that's normal, the oil pump would reduce with engine revs   I'm running 20/50 mineral oil.  and the unions are all oil tight. Handy thing I have a photo of the original Gauge from 1978 showing similar pressure.

Other Bikes / Importing a bike and NOVA
« on: March 25, 2026, 09:24:45 PM »
Hi all, wondered if anyone has experience with importation and "late notification" process with HMRC before DVLA registration.
what is the position with a 1970 triumph motorcycle imported into the uk 12 years ago and no nova certificate applied for till now in 2026? I’m trying to purchase the bike from the seller who returned to Uk 12 years ago after working in Namibia. The bike was stored and needs restoration, I had arranged to buy and pick it up last week but had second thoughts, seller said he will try and get it sorted out. I really want the bike but looks problematic If take it as is.
What’s the way forward with this? Would appreciate any comments I could pass on to the seller.
Cheers

Recommended Sources for Parts and Services / Mineral Oil
« on: April 03, 2025, 02:29:24 PM »
recently purchased a non detergent oil on ebay, https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/373537080204
thought it good value,  usually buy their semi synth 10-40 motorcycle oil.
excuse my ignorance, but I see its a SAE40 anyone used sae40 in their SOHC?  any perceived problem using this oil? I’ll refrain from asking which is the best oil for the sohc..Castrol gtx.

CB750 / Head leak after rebuild
« on: December 11, 2024, 04:33:59 PM »
fit like,
regards to my 1970 CB750 cylinder head which I'm planning to skim. after a full rebuild with everything replaced I skimped on the head gasket,  after just 200 really good miles & showing good compression, I noticed the head was leaking, realised I'd fitted the wrong head gasket, DS did assure I had the correct head gasket set, should have known better! rapid learning curve on gaskets and o-rings.  I notice 4 round indentations between  2-3 and 3-4 cylinder, the main oil leak is from fitting the wrong cheap head gasket, noticed 2 of these indentations have allowed a little oil into the head,. Anyone know what these indentations on the head surface are? anyone recognise what these might be?
thanks

CB750 / Teardown time.
« on: May 02, 2022, 10:34:49 PM »
Hi all,  decided to take the plunge and give the Honda a teardown and address a few issues, fix a dog in the sump pan 4th Gear countershaft sprocket 34T, (didn't affect the gear change, broke off cleanly), will replace the crank oil seal(was cured with a red heat proof unlipped seal & THREEBOND 1184, do the mains shells, a few are scuffed, crank mains looks fine and seems to measure unworn, all those 1000 mile oil changes worked. I've left the crank pins on for now, they seem nice with just a little side to side play, and are tight up and down. Might do them, the primary chains measured 66.43 so ok,  the engine was running good, but seeing debris off of the cam chain tensioner wheels, these are original , I'll change the Guide and wheels and chain while I'm in there.  enjoying seeing out how little wear is on the engine, seems the camshaft has a bit of wear mainly on the lobs.

the crank pins shells have only done about 34,000 35 on the bike since they were done back in 1990,  the invoice for that work has some useful info on it
cheers

CB750 / Accident at Roundabout
« on: March 01, 2021, 02:19:05 PM »
Hi all, looking for a second opinion, sorry haven't been on here in a while, too many distractions, need to focus more on what really matters.. having said that.. I was rear ended at a busy roundabout Friday 1.40pm, my previously perfect Rear mudguard and No plate Holder took the brunt, the Points cover mashed, Right hand brake leaver bent at end, front brake binding so probably the pivot bolt. very slight scuff to my brake lever pedal, and slight scuffing to my aftermarket exhaust.   Overall very lucky considering the shunt was quite an impact!  the good news my handlebars seem unaffected! my first accident in many a year,  24yr old female driver is willing to pay for the Damage seems genuine, this will save going through the insurance, It looks like all the parts are available except the rear fender and no plate holder which are UK spec, and which I'd like to retain. I wonder if its possible a Good panel beater could sort the Mudguard and plate holder?is there one?  its always been a road going bike I want to stay this way,  I did take lots of photos at the scene of accident but I'm reticent to publish these at the moment, I'm still talking to the Driver of the car.

CB750 / Found this in Sump pan
« on: December 22, 2014, 02:33:53 PM »
Hi all,
Was changing the oil and filter today, and had a look in the sump pan, found this piece of metal, thank you Santa....been over 20,000mls since I last had a look in the sump, was expecting some residue in there, looks like there's black bits off the camchain guide, and some small bits of metal, not many, and this chunk of metal which looks sheared.
The bikes running and starting fine, though there has been an on off rattle, low down at the front of the engine, seems to have gone.
Any ides what this chunk of metal might be? and the prognosis? dreading this... part of the tensioner assembly?

CB750 / gunson's tachostrobe
« on: November 24, 2014, 08:54:20 PM »
Hi all, thought I'd give the forum a try,  I'm trying to double check the timing on the Honda with my trusty old tachostrobe, I can get the Gunson's universal spring connector on no 1 or 4 spark plug no problem, without it shorting on the head, but now finding it impossible to get it on 2 or 3, this connector has always been a pain to use, I think its more suited to a distributer cap, anyone know a more reliable connector I could convert it so its sohc friendly? Ah the joys of points ignition, its all coming back!!
