CB350/400 / Clutch lifter mechanism
« on: October 20, 2025, 05:54:33 PM »
I'm having some problems with my gear changes and finding neutral when my 400f engine is hot. Cable is running free and adjusted correctly at both ends.
I know that the clutch lifter mechanism has some wear. The 3 ball bearings will fall out of their cage until assembled. Could that be causing the problem or is it something more serious?

Out & About / Scottish meet 2025?
« on: August 20, 2025, 04:35:55 PM »
I did say way back that I would look at arranging another meet up in Scotland for the hardy forum members up here.
I've had a lot on my plate so not managed to do that yet. Just sounding people out to see if there is a desire for a meet in September or even early October.
The plan was to get together in the Carrbridge, Granton-on-Spey area.

Any interest?

I'm not available 19th/20th Sept, that's wedding anniversary, so more than my life's worth!

Desperately Seeking!! / Honda VF750c parts needed.

Bit of a longshot - Has anybody got front forks or rear wheel spindle for a 1985 Honda VF750C lying around and gathering dust that they'd like to sell? Asking for a friend, he knows about the camshaft problems!

Misc / Open / Big storm
« on: January 25, 2025, 01:17:55 PM »
Just checking that everyone survived the storm without any serious damage. It was a very rough day yesterday with nearly 100mph winds here. The roof ripped off a large block of flats in Dundee and lots of trees down, chimney pots flying! Our garden tool shed moved off it's blocks but no damage for us luckily. No power cuts either, but many people in Scotland and N Ireland still without power. 😟

Anorak's Corner / Milling machine advice
« on: November 02, 2024, 11:26:11 AM »
I'm going to transfer a Naerok RDM350M Milling machine from my father's workshop up to mine. It's a heavy piece of kit and access is restricted so lifting gear is not an option.
A manual I found for it shows it being delivered/moved in one assembly. It must be possible to partly dismantle it for ease of transport and for maintenance. I tried to remove the main head assembly from the vertical column last time I was there but it would not lift past a certain point. I had removed the motor and the column clamp bolts but couldn't see anything else preventing the assembly from lifting off. Am I missing something, or do I lift the head assembly and column off the base plate together?
Any advice from our engineering experts would be greatly appreciated.
Manual pages attached.

Something strange is going on with some of the Gallery pictures. The first 8 or so pics have suddenly jumped up to 1800+ views but other pics are near normal numbers of views.
Any clues?

Out & About / SOHC meet in Scotland
« on: February 07, 2024, 01:04:09 PM »
Last year I suggested a meet up in Scotland for forum members, particularly those that live in more remote parts and don't travel too far down South. We don't want to be corrupted by the Southern Softies! 😉

Just kidding, the arthritis stops me from riding too far these days. The joys of reaching retirement age.

So, if anybody fancies meeting up, I suggest The Crieff Visitor Centre, PH7 4HQ on 29th or 30th June.
It's fairly central Scotland and has a large free car park, restaurant and facilities. It's a regular stop off for me when out for a ride.

There is plenty of accommodation in Crieff and surrounding area if anybody needs to stay over or are touring Scotland at the same time.

Nothing is set in stone, so date and place are flexible.

Misc / Open / Security Lights
« on: January 27, 2024, 11:59:05 AM »
I need some advice from the SOHC collective. I want to put a couple of security lights on the house, one for the back garden and one for the garage door. The easiest solution would be solar powered LED lights with motion sensors. Somewhere in the 800 to 1200 lumens region would be bright enough. I don't need to dazzle the whole neighbourhood!
There are plenty on the market but reviews/feedback are pretty hit and miss. Many don't work at all or fail very quickly.

Has anybody got a good recommendation for a reliable light that doesn't cost a fortune?  Or am I better off biting the bullet and fitting mains powered lights?

Misc / Open / 400f parts in auction
« on: November 14, 2023, 05:40:42 PM »
H J Pugh in Ledbury are having their next m/c auction on Nov. 24/25th. There are a lot of parts for 400f in several different lots. Frame, engine parts, exhaust,  mudguards,  etc, etc.

Worth a look if you're after parts for your projects or stash.

Misc / Open / Oil viscosity
« on: August 24, 2023, 10:48:14 AM »
In the search for better fuel efficiency, engine oil has been getting lower and lower viscosity. I'm now seeing oils getting down to 0w viscosity!  How much protection does that give a modern engine? Is better fuel efficiency at the cost of shorter engine life?
I know we can't (wouldn't)  use thin oils like that in our sohc engines, but I'm curious about the need for such low viscosities.
