CB350/400 / NOT Honda related - Moto Guzzi question...
« on: August 19, 2025, 08:19:18 AM »
HI all, I am looking at a companion for my 400F and am interested in a Moto Guzzi V7.  Does anyone here have experience with the V7?  I realize this is not Honda related but I'd rather ask folks I "know" than watch any more of the endless reviews on line extolling its "character."  I have never ridden one and many of the things lauded as "character" seem to me to be "annoying."  Anyone here with experience?

I can understand if a moderator removes this as not Honda related...

CB350/400 / Speedometer speed vs GPS speed
« on: August 06, 2025, 03:03:36 PM »
When I was out today I decided to check the speedo indicated speed vs a GPS (Speedometer) app on my iPhone.  Generally, it seemed to show that the speedo indicated  a +5MPH difference at all speed ranges from 20 to 70 MPH.  The speedo (and tach) are new DSS items.  I have no idea if the app is accurate and see no way to accurately check either the speedo OR the app.  FWIW, the app has indicated the GWR London to Bristol run as reaching speeds of 125MPH.  Does it?

CB350/400 / CLUTCH SWITCH ???
« on: August 03, 2025, 02:59:37 PM »
I have seen references to a "clutch switch" that locks out the starter unless the gear shifter is in neutral OR the clutch level is pulled in.  My '76 UK CB400 will engage the starter in gear with the clutch released.

The owners manual for the bike does not mention a clutch switch BUT the electrical schematic in the same owners manual shows a clutch switch in the UK model.

Did a UK bike have a clutch switch or not???

CB350/400 / Maybe the redline should be 12k RPM!
« on: August 02, 2025, 05:43:25 PM »
OK, not really but I missed a full throttle 2-3 shift today and the tach needle (and engine RPM) went flying to the OTHER side of the tach's red zone!

Engine acted as if nothing had happened and continued to run perfectly, including several more redline (non-missed) shifts!  I post this NOT to encourage spinning to 12,000 RPM, but as a comment that these were very well made little engines!  :)

CB350/400 / Thread size for the mirrors?
« on: August 01, 2025, 07:29:38 PM »
Hi all, I installed the new handlebar mirrors today and want to "plug" the holes where the OEM mirrors screwed in.  Anybody know the thread size?

CB350/400 / Drilling brake rotor
« on: August 01, 2025, 02:52:28 PM »
I have a spare CB 400 front brake rotor and am thinking about having it drilled. I COULD do it myself but the measuring/marking out/drilling the holes is more fiddly than I prefer to deal with!  ;)  Can someone recommend a UK shop that does this?

CB350/400 / Fun Ride Today...
« on: June 25, 2025, 06:35:32 PM »
Today I took the 400 out for a spirited ride to "nowhere in particular."  Basically just headed west and then took whatever little road - some were single track- that I came across and ended up having a very enjoyable couple of hours.  Once again I have to say this bike is the most FUN bike I can remember owning after maybe my first couple of motorcycles when I was very young.  I've owned/ridden bikes from 125ccs to 1250 ccs with the vast majority being 750 and larger sport bikes.

BUT none of those were as much fun as this CB400F on the narrow, twisty roads we like to ride.  Today I was so enthused I'm now thinking of buying a Go Pro or similar camera and mounting it on the bike.  I recently sold my '19 Kawasaki Z900RS Cafe and don't miss it at ALL - this little Honda is just so much more fun.  AND, if I should fall over on it in a pub parking lot - I can actually pick it up by myself!

Re that...

Yeah, I know there are videos of 5ft tall, 110 pound women picking up a big Harley but when I dropped my Kawasaki in a pub parking lot when we stopped to have lunch - foot slid out on the gravel - it took three of us to pick it back up!!!!  But hey, the bartender who ran out to help pick it up gave me a free pint!

Oh...anybody have experience with Go Pro/other similar cameras you'd recommend?

CB350/400 / Fuel reserve...worth checking how much you have.
« on: May 06, 2025, 12:51:42 PM »
I just got around to doing that today on my 400.  I put it in the normal fuel position and drained the fuel.  Then I switched it to the reserve position to see how much more fuel there would be.  Turned out there was NONE.  So I pulled the petcock.  The plastic filter/ tube assembly was totally jammed in the tank fitting, as if the plastic had expanded over the years - I had to work it out with pliers.  And it was obviously not seated properly in the petcock so the petcock was just picking up fuel from the bottom of the tank at all times.

So I ordered a new filter tube/the two gaskets from DSS.  I'd been meaning to check this since I bought the bike nearly two years ago but once again found that "meaning to" do something never seems to actually get it done! ;)

CB350/400 / Currently available shock absorbers?
« on: April 29, 2025, 06:55:59 AM »
Hi All!

Took the 400F out yesterday after a 5 month layup - started/ran perfectly!  :)   BUT (there always seems to be a "but...") I now find the rear shocks to be less than I'd like.  I replaced the old shocks last year with a pair from DSS which fit perfectly and look original however I'd like a pair with improved capability - some adjustment other than the spring tension would be nice.

Any thoughts for something better than the DSS?

CB350/400 / Has anyone used one of the UK motorcycle buying services?
« on: April 04, 2025, 11:40:57 AM »
Since my CB400 has become my "daily rider" I want to sell my 2019 Kawasaki Z900RS Cafe but do not want to deal with the process of advertising/accepting calls/tire kickers, etc.  I see there are several motorcycle-buying businesses, stating words to the effect of,   "contact us, we'll give you a quote and pick up the bike/pay cash."  I accept the fact that the bike could sell to an individual for more than they will pay but that's OK.   Any recommendations for a specific company?

CB350/400 / Carb Spacer - screw head
« on: November 03, 2024, 08:44:22 AM »
I have new carb spacers/insulators that I figured to install while I have the carbs off but when trying to remove the original screws (with proper JIS screwdriver) , I buggered the slots in the head on the bottom screw of the first insulator.  Top screw came out OK.  Any thoughts on how to remove that screw ( and probably others)?

Obviously I could just put the other screw back in and forget about changing them but I'd prefer installing the new insulators as planned.

CB350/400 / Larger main jet...
« on: November 03, 2024, 08:31:08 AM »
I would like to try the next size larger main jet from the OEM 75s.  DSS does not seem to carry anything other than the 75.  Are larger sizes available nowadays anywhere?

I've been thinking about that for a while re ethanol blend fuels and since I have the carbs off at the moment for a different reason, it would be a good time to change them/perform the experiment!

CB350/400 / Right-side foot peg annoying
« on: October 31, 2024, 08:57:58 PM »
My right side footpeg seems to regularly find itself in the vertical position so that when I start moving and try to place my foot on the peg my foot lands on "nothing."  I realize that peg has to shift to allow use of the kick start lever (someday I'll have to try kickstarting to see if it actually works!).

I could drill a hole/install a removable pin to keep the peg in the riding position but wondering if anyone has experienced this and found a less invasive solution.

CB350/400 / My CB400 is a cold-blooded little sucker!
« on: October 31, 2024, 05:43:59 PM »
Went out for a ride today - bike hadn't been ridden in 4-5 weeks.  It took probably 10+ attempts to start before it would finally run for more than a second or two.  This was with choke full on/nursing it as necessary.  Once it started/sputtered for a few seconds it then fast idled properly with some fiddling with the fast idle/choke lever.  Once I got on the bike and started off, it ran perfectly.  But cold starts after sitting for an extended period are not its thing.

Are they generally stubborn about cold starts or is it just mine?  ;)

In any case, I rode for about 20 miles after adding some Stabil/filling the tank with normal pump E10 thinking that might be the last ride this year though we're thinking of taking a ride next week if the weather cooperates.
