Just read a Road Test Report in Classic Motorcycle Cycle Mechanics from December 2015 issue on the RE5.
It apparently has five cables on the throttle, two open and close, two port valve open & close, one to the oil pump.

My 400 was the same when I first had it running after 10 years of being in POs garage.
Turned out to be low compressions, all were even but not enough. Try the Easystart spray test on the air box.

Welcome to the sohc community. An easy check is when it has stood for a few days, squirt some Easy start into the air cleaner box, if it starts immediately I would then start with basic checks, compression, ignition timing, check out advancer is working.

Original ones are steel, Ted. Even the new reproduction ones from DSS have a steel base.
On the upside it will not rot away, it has the rubber buffers, the seat hinge and catch work so I assumed it was original. 👍

Have you tried a wire from a wire brush?

My 400 has a type of plastic seat base not steel.
I don't know if it's original or not.

Don’t worry I am going to buy some new coils from DS , it’s not really worth the effort to try and refurbish a set of coils.
I'd heard a rumour that the DS coils are made by the original supplier to Honda.

Everything set up again today so just to recap.
Can anyone recommend a new set of coils for my 400 4 that are decent , original coils are ok but leads are moulded in so cannot be changed so ideally I would like some coils that I can change the leads on when they get ropy.
I fitted Dyna S coils as part of their electronic ignition kits, I adapted the existing coil brackets to make the Dyna coils fit.

My 400 will easily reach 70 mph, I expect it would readily reach 90 mph plus if it were legal in the UK.
As Julie says you need to rev them through the gears, pretty sure mine would do 60 mph in fourth gear with two to spare.

I assume when you mention charging issue that it's not charging. I would start with checking the first connector block from the alternator, it might just be corroded terminals in the block. Next I would check the connections to the voltage rectifier and the voltage regulator. Also check the main earth connections, loom to frame, engine to earth strap etc.
If the above do not work then its worth using the search facility on here for checking the alternator field windings etc its a pretty regular area of discussion so you should come up with plenty of threads/posts on the subject. I have never had to go beyond the basics with my 400 so I can't advise on the more complex aspects.

A solvent that can remove Tank sealant especially Epoxy Resin based ones will almost certainly remove paint I would have thought.
My first thought was to clean out the tank to remove any loose sealant, then fit extra in line filter(s) to catch what passes throught the standard filter arrangement, not a fix but it means you can ride the bike.

The product description does not mention anything about being an Epoxy Remover aside from on the tin itself.
It just reads like a repair product to me unless I'm missing something.
