Not run my 500 in yet, on the 400, when in 3rd or above I like to see at least 6k revs on the clock on flat roads, on a uphill climb closer to 6500 depending on if it's feels under load. Here in the UK with 30 & 40 mph limits everywhere I'm often in 3rd or 4th.

When I am out on my 400, the expresion ride it like you stole it springs to mind.
It's like a video game, going through the gears, keeping the revs up to be on song.

So if my (weak) math is correct, and the "distributor" cam is spinning at engine RPM, at red line (10,000RPM) those points are opening/closing more than 166 times per second. Holy moly!!! Is that even possible or have I grossly mis-figured?
Yep 166.66 times per second for each set of points.

Have you undone the retaining ring, it's a left hand thread?
The downloadable manual here will show you how to remove it.
You will need the tool or make one similar, use the search facility here it's come up loads of times.

Try doing this Ted. We found that if the engine bolts were tightened with no regard to engine position the engine buzzed or vibrated. Try loosely fitting all the bolts, lift the engine a little with the jack and then check every bolt. If every bolt slides in and out the engines in the right position, if even one drags or resists being moved the engines needs to be repositioned slightly until they all move easily. Only then do you tighten the nuts. It’s a bit of a faff but the results seem worth it.

Okay, I confess, the tyres were positioned for the sake of the camera!! The old one had the old inner tube stuffed into it to spread the beading outwards and collapse the centre, and the new one has just been fitted to the wheel. The old one was fitted 6 years ago, and approx 9,000 miles. The reason for renewing being that once the centre tread starts to lose its shape it has a tendency to "white line", ie, wiggle its arse when you cross grooves at a shallow angle. I must stop doing burn-outs at every green traffic light I guess!!! When I mentioned about my choice of tyres, it was mainly that I thought the K82's were in keeping with the style of bike, whereas I have a GB250 Clubman fitted with Avon Roadriders for the same reason, and yes, it will leave the 400 for dead on bends.
I know that sensation as "Tramlining" it was very scary on my XJ900 at times.

My BiL came today to help fit my engine in the frame. Dave jacked it up whilst I tilted it to get it in place, took about 30 ins with faffing about & being careful. Just fitted the rear and front mounting bolts in place, I need to check a few things like bolt orientation before I tighten up the flange nuts. #  PXL_20260813_111906403 by Macabe Thiele, on Flickr

Cibie, I always think of Oscar's & Super Oscar driving lights from the Monte Carlo era of Mini Coopers that were disqualified on a lighting technicality by the French in 1966. No surprise that Citroen ended up winning, BL who were 1,2&3 were disqualified as was the Ford in 4th place.
Ted, I have a distant memory telling me that at the time, French registered cars had to have yellow headlamps, but the Citroens that won by default were said to have white lights.
Micky you are right about French Cars needing yellow headlamps back then, I remember my Dad having yellow plastic covers for the headlamps of his Vauxhall for when he drove through France to Spain. What you say about the Citroen having white headlamps sounds typically French, as did the reply from Charles De Gaulle "Non" when we tried to join the EU.

I've always rated Hella headlamps.
The best 7" headlamp units I ever owned that would fit in a Lucas bowl were Carello Pajods, they were fitted to E-Type Jaguars as an upgrade by enthusiasts.
Back in the late 1960s-1970s the fashion was for Concave lenses like Cibie.
The Pajods were convex outer glass to the point of being almost bug eyed with a parabolic reflectors, fantastic dip beams cut off.
Carello Biode were very similar if not the same - used pairs fetch over £300 on flea bay.

What wattage h4 is best to use?
Also I like the idea of the led option but hate the colour of anything blue or white and want the traditional halogen output colour, is this possible?

Not all LED lamps are blue, once you have tried a decent LED lamp the traditional lights look quite yellow. I have used Night breaker bulbs on our previous cars, great light output, they often fail quite early. This is anecdotal evidence, I'm not saying it's a fact, just my experience, my dip beams would fail after about 18 months.
