CB750 / Fixing cracked side panels
« on: March 11, 2026, 12:22:17 AM »
Can anyone tell me exactly what plastic the original Honda side panels were made from, and what will stick to them properly  ?
I've managed to find a pair with paintwork to match my K4 tank .
The trouble is that both have hairline cracks here and there.
I'm thinking that if I don't reinforce them on the inside somehow,  they're going to disintegrate if I start using them on the road.

Misc / Open / Decent Old Suzuki forums anywhere ?
« on: February 04, 2026, 05:47:26 PM »
I've acquired the mortal remains of a Suzuki  GS750 project.
Plenty of potential,  but unlike my Honda Projects  (CB750F1,  CB750K1, and CB550F), I can't seem to find any sort of traditional forum for people who want to restore these bikes.
I tried the Old Skool Suzuki site, but the admin seems to have died of boredom or something.
Then I tried to get on the VJMC forums ( I am a VJMC member)
Instead of my profile being approved,  I got banned for life for having a Virtual Private Network  ( which I definitely don't have  )
That only leaves the groups on FB, and I hate Facebook.
I'm really not sure where to try next.
Any suggestions  ?

CB500/550 / 627B carbs
« on: February 02, 2026, 07:28:30 PM »
I'm attempting to build up a  CB550F, or something closely resembling a 550F.
I now find myself in possession of two sets of 627B carbs which I believe were originally from a CB500F.
Will these be of any use to me ?
Apparently I need the 069A carbs, but these have eluded me so far  (at least at a reasonable price anyway).
Would it be worth trying to re-jet the 627B units to work with a 550F engine  ?
Or better to start saving my pennies towards the correct carbs ?

CB750 / Early CB750 forks vs early CB500F forks ?
« on: January 23, 2026, 09:00:13 AM »
I've got a pair of CB500F forks here, dismantled,  and in very poor condition.
I'm just wondering if they share any common components with the early CB750, (which I actually aspire to owning at some point).
Unfortunately,  I don't have a parts catalogue for the 500, so I can't compare parts numbers at present  (and they don't tell the whole story)
There must be someone on here who has built both of these bikes, I'd appreciate the benefit of your knowledge.

CB500/550 / CB550F Seats
« on: January 13, 2026, 01:00:31 PM »
Pattern copies available from DSS for an eye watering £309 including UK delivery.
By comparison,  DSS sell a metal base CB750K6 seat which will land on your doorstep for just £116.
I really can't see any justification for such an extortionate price for something which is just a sandwich of GRP, foam rubber,  and PVC.
So I'm just wondering if there's an alternative source available in Europe anywhere ?
I actually found a dealer in the USA who would ship the same seat for £206, but then with customs duties etc it's probably not worth the extra hassle.

CB500/550 / 550F vs 550K tanks
« on: January 12, 2026, 11:14:35 PM »
Could some kind person,  with a CB550F, please manage to run a tape measure along the tank, and post up the overall length please  ?
No rush, my 550 is a "back burner " project.
I'm asking because I've got what I thought was a half decent 550F tank, but I've read here and there,  that the K model tank looks very similar,  but is actually longer.
I guess that this refers to the later K model tank with the flush filler flap.
I've tried looking at various photos of the F and the late K models,  and TBH, I can't seem to see anything in it.
Obviously,  if I've got the wrong tank (there's no paint on it to give any clues), I'd really like to find out before I put any work into it

CB500/550 / Lower yoke steering stops
« on: January 11, 2026, 07:27:25 PM »
I've got three 550/500 lower yokes with damaged steering stop lugs.
Planning to build up with weld and grind back to the original profile.
I'm just wondering what the original material is,  and what welding process would be best.
Tempted to try MIG welding with mild steel wire.
Maybe stick welding with a special rod would be better ?
Any Metalurgists out there  ?

CB750 / Long Shot
« on: January 08, 2026, 12:20:13 AM »
Erm........I should probably have posted this in the  "desperately seeking" section, but here goes....
I want to  put '69 type side panels on a '71 K1 based bike.
I've already got the side panels but apparently it requires the fitting of a '69 type oil tank also.
And therin lies the problem  - there don't seem to be any used ones to be had.
I did find one on ebay  - for £600 !
And apparently that got sold.
The apparent rarity suggests maybe a durability issue with the early oil tanks  ?
Well TBH, I really don't fancy paying out £600 or anything near.
Could I pick up a damaged/split tank and repair it  ?
Or maybe just substitute something else  ?

CB750 / Internal silencer painting
« on: December 21, 2025, 09:13:46 AM »
I've just bought a new set of Busso exhausts from DSS.
Who makes a paint system for coating the inside of the silencers  ?
I've seen something "specialist" advertised somewhere,  but I can't remember what or who sold it.
I generally try to avoid "top dollar" automotive products, but in this case the exhaust system was over £1300, so maybe using something expensive would be justified.

CB750 / 750K Tank Shape
« on: December 02, 2025, 06:42:59 PM »
I doubt if anyone will bother to reply to this question,  but here goes anyway.
Is there any substantial change in tank shape from 1969 to 1974 ?
I'm not well versed in the secrets of the original CB750 model, Sandcast, Die-cast, etc , etc.
I'm vaguely aware of something known as the "wrinkle tank" which is allegedly very rare and valuable, even though the wrinkles are only visible through the filler cap apparture.
I'm also aware that the fuel tap changed type and location possibly with the K5 model.
But basically I'd just like to know if the tank changed in shape or features between '69 and '74.
I wait expectantly for a plethora of eager replies

CB750 / Honda Brier Brown Metalic
« on: December 02, 2025, 03:29:11 PM »
Anyone got any idea for a closely matching automotive colour for this paint please  ?
ie a common car colour which isn't far off.
Tank is apparently off a US market CB750K2, and the painted finish leaves a lot to be desired.
I need to retouch a few areas and then spray up a pair of side panels to match.
Not a concourse restoration job.
Just has to look reasonable

CB500/550 / CB550F
« on: November 27, 2025, 06:55:34 AM »
I'm considering taking on a 550F project after making the mistake of selling the last one in 1999.
I'm pretty clued up on SOHC 750's now, but I've forgotten most of what I learned about the 550.
So could someone with the requisite wisdom please give me some clues on what's likely to be missing or broken on these bikes.
I seem to remember issues with rear brake drums and fracture prone top yokes (or was that the 500 ?)
Not sure about the above really,  but I'd like to know exactly what I should be looking at when considering a project bike

CB750 / Powder coating
« on: October 20, 2025, 06:37:34 PM »
How much should I be looking at paying to have everything that was originally black media blasted and powder coated ?
I've got a CB750F1 to put together and everything needs doing,  frame,  swingarm, yokes, stands, brackets,  etc,
UK based

CB750 / CB750 charging system
« on: September 03, 2025, 12:46:00 AM »
Anyone fitted the bargain basement combined rectifier regulator units being sold on ebay  ?
£20 - £25 seems to be the going rate,
DSS want around three times as much for a similar pattern item
I wonder if they're actually any better  ?

CB750 / Gone and ripped myself off again !
« on: August 25, 2025, 05:49:31 PM »
Don't you just hate it when this happens.
I sporadically buy CB750 speedos and tachos when they come up cheap on ebay.
TBH, I can't remember who I bought this tacho from, but I probably left +ve feedback on it.
Just fitted it to my 750K project  (because the one fitted had a dent in the bezel).
Everything went together fine until I stopped to check the alignment.
Many foul oaths were muttered  !
Now does anyone manufacture replacement crimp bands for these instruments  ? [ Guests cannot view attachments ]
