CB500/550 / Front brake - light switch query
« on: November 06, 2025, 01:14:23 PM »
It's a pressure switch. Mine is tight/ corroded in the three-way mounting and I'm wary of snapping it off.

Aside from that here a way to test it when it's off the bike/ without fluid in it?

Why does one of the bullet connectors seem to be hollow, and one isn't ( see piccie)?

Thanks for any insight!

Misc / Open / Plug in garage lights
« on: October 03, 2025, 02:30:38 PM »
Has anyone used any plug in / plug together garage lights - I'm thinking about strip lights for the ceiling but ones that don't require wiring in...a(ie) they come with three pin plugs and can also be joined to others.
I've seen various ones online but just wondering if anyone has used any and would recommend any?
I've also seen LED battens, but they look as if you can't change a bulb - if they fail you need to replace the whole unit - is that the case,?
Thanks!

Nice advert on my facebk feed. I'm not sure 'quality part' is how I would describe it 🙂.

CB500/550 / Oil leak from points cover.CB550.
« on: February 16, 2025, 12:26:09 PM »
Is it possible to have a leak from the points cover?. I have an engine in the bike that I haven't run, beyond briefly firing it up - bike had the oil topped up and was happy sitting on the side stand but when I propped it up more vertically ( wood under the side-stand) I found a puddle of oil.

Are their seals that could leak, and if so, are they easy to replace without major surgery?!

Misc / Open / Conservatory Roofs and Insulation
« on: January 12, 2025, 08:21:19 AM »
With all the ice outside I'm looking at the conservatory as a spot that I could wheel a bike into to work on as I'm not allowed to clean carbs in the kitchen 🙁....and have seen lots of adverts and online feeds about (a) insulated roofs/roof panels (b) just putting a tile roof on top - both advertised as just going on an existing conservatory and making it all-year-round usable. Of course, all the comments linked to the ads say how amazing the roof/panelling etc is...but I take those with a pinch of salt.

Has anyone done this to a conservatory - and can either of these actually make it a usable room all year round. I'm assuming it would still need a heater! Thanks for any thoughts!

Out & About / Outdoor workshop
« on: July 28, 2024, 03:00:30 PM »
Amazing riding weather today, but the kids have been booted off to their grannies in Suffolk for the next two weeks (meaning no-one hammering a football against the garage wall...it's like being in a drum...., or asking me to play 'first to three goals'; and my wife is at the Latitude festival, also mile's away in Suffolk and won't be home today.

So I thought I would make use of my outdoor workshop, under the apple tree, as I put a new front end on my bike (swapping from a mix of cb650 forks, 400 wheels and Kawasaki brakes to a more original set-up). Absolute silence in the garden, virtually nothing driving through the village...and no-where I need to be apart from here. I feel a song coming on!

Out & About / Ride to Duxford today.
« on: July 20, 2024, 06:19:45 PM »
IWM Duxford today...but not on an SOHC 🙁. Even so, it was fun! Arrived in time to see a Hurricane, a Harvard and three Spitfires take off and head away, whilst a pair of Tiger Moths did their usual slow pottering about. 50 mile round trip so just a pleasant afternoon out!

For anyone in the area, loads of cars and bikes to look at. It's usually quite warm and sunny too🙂! Park in the village and walk down to the common as it's all pretty busy.

Out & About / NY500 cafe Pickering
« on: July 13, 2024, 07:58:40 AM »
I'm in the car today because it's a Yorkshire summer....and I'm with the family. Stopped at the NY500 cafe on the road between Malton and Pickering.

It's a big old spot designed for vehicle meets with stacks of parking, big cafe with loads of memorabilia, signs, and classic vehicles for sale and on display including (at the moment) a MK1 Capri, 99's Triumph Trident streetfighter, GS..Suzuki thingy, Metro Rally car BSA Gold Star. Good spot to stop and have a cup of tea and a butty. Lots of outdoor tables too - pity today was so chilly!

I've just been using this on my Zephyr 550 carbs. Bike started but wouldn't pull away and stalled as I fed in revds. With no desire to take the carbs apart...I tried this stuff, which supposedly clears out the gunk/ deposits etc.

Warm up engine. Air filter out. Spray directly into carbs. Leave running for three minutes.

Bingo! I could hear it clear after about 2 mins as the revs suddenly picked up and she began to run more strongly. So I went for a little ride as and it was perfect.

Bike had been standing for about a year, but still started so I assumed it was a blockages in the main jets. Fab stuff - I'm back on the road! Recommended trying this before you get into too much dismantling.

Misc / Open / Are all Schraeder valves the same?
« on: March 25, 2024, 06:13:12 PM »
I found a 550 wheel/ tyre without a valve, so I took one from a brand new mountain bike tyre and popped it in. It fits and seems to be holding air .....I assume they are all built to the same standard so no reason for a bicycle one not to work on motorbike. Pressure is probably similar.

Any thoughts gratefully received!

Misc / Open / Eat the Peach film
« on: March 03, 2024, 07:21:11 PM »
I started to watch this film - Eat the Peach - on BBC iPlayer.

Motorcycle film from 1986 / Ireland.... started off well with an early 80's Honda dirtbike and a three-wheeled Honda thingy ( I recall watching the lady-Mayor of Hull flipping one of those before they were outlawed!). I only watched 15 mins because I'm rubbish at sitting in front of the telly, but it looks pretty watchable - and it's on BBC iPlayer so it's free!  Thought it was worth mentioning!

Plus, it also referenced Roustabout by Elvis, which inspired the film and led me to a film of Elvis on the Wall of Death ( check out YouTube). Awesome!
