Easy enough to test though. Mark a link and a tooth on the rear sprocket and see if it lands on it everytime. Get someone to test the 550 and see if it does it on that.

I had a test lined up Bryan to test your theory. Unfortunately my illness meant it has been delayed until I can get back to working on the bike. What I intend doing is fitting a 500 clutch basket on my 500 as standard, do some tests on revs versus speed etc, maybe mpg and then replace the clutch and primary gear with one off a 550. I have a 550 rear gear on a 500 basket so it’s a simple swap, same engine etc so no bias should be apparent. Then do the same tests and see how they compare.

As you know it’s not possible to fit a full 550 clutch on a 500 engine due to crankcase differences. Hence why I designed the test this way.

Got to say I disagree with that Bryan. At the time the 550 was in real competition with stuff like the GT550 and the kwack 500 and most of the motorcycle mags tended to be fixated on standing quarter times, so Honda tried to counter that with a bigger sprocket to get that time down.

That’s my take on it.

You seem to be forgetting that only the 550 has a chain length of 100, the 500 is 98. The 500 uses 17/34 sprockets whereas the 550 uses 17/37 sprockets so the maths is different.

CB500/550 / Re: Re Assemble Engine in or out of the Frame
« on: March 11, 2026, 10:16:17 AM »
Depends. If the frame is bare then assemble outside the frame. However if it’s not then just assemble the crankcases, no clutch, no rotor etc and assemble in the frame afterwards. You can lift it solo if required, less chance of frame marking and you can align the engine easier in the frame mounts. Makes for a smoother ride as it vibrates less that way. No oil pan on either way or oil filter.

You can buy right angled feeler gauges as it happens.

There are always some valves that are down on tdc.

The main stand pivot pin isn’t in the maintenance schedule, neither is the rear brake pivot pin yet both require greasing every few years or they’ll either seize or worse oval out the frame mounts.

I’m in Stockport, so not a million miles away. Yes it will fit your F1. It has a label still attached, I’ll need to check it’s the right one but I seem to recall it’s for the F as that’s roughly what I have.

Not on Messenger but am on WhatsApp.

Whereabouts in Cheshire? I have a spare loom for the F model made by Big Al if you’re interested.

Replace the fuel pipe as well, the old one will most likely be going hard and cracking.

Check the needle clips are in the right slot and the jets are the correct size, you never know who's been tampering with them over the years.

I was watching a How it's Made TV program the other night and oddly they referenced alloy distortion in it, it was 150c so that's confirmed. There was also a program on the SR71 Blackbird plane, it also mentioned that they couldn't make it out of alloy like the U2 again mentioning the distortion problem above 150c. They made it out of titanium instead.

Has anyone put a laser temp gun on these engines after a good thrashing? I’d be interested in what temp they are at.

Oddly the web says any temp above 150 risks distortion especially with alloy with magnesium in it. Melting point of aluminium is around 660c so you’d think 220 would be safe but it appears not.

Are the Wemoto Teflon lined like the OE cables?

I had to buy a bigger pair of circlip pliers to get that out last time I took a 400 apart. My normal SP circlip pliers just didn't have the strength in the handle, it would actually twist with the pressure. You don't want to be in way of it either if it lets go!
As for the cam tensioner horseshoe, I've never seen one that hasn't had some chain damage. The one sold by DSS is an excellent replacement having a proper pivot pin fitted, a shame the guy who makes them in South Africa and who is a member on here is unable to sell them direct due to the postage charges involved.

Having grown up in South Africa in the 1970's I would very much like to know who the SA chap is?

He's called TTR400 and his website is here.

Does great work.

If I ever get to the point I’m seriously looking for one Murf I’ll do that. Done loads of work on the cbx when I was in the trade. For some reason I always seemed to get them when they came in for work. Maybe they intimidated the other mechanics? I used to have hundreds of spare shims for them but gave them away a few years ago.

I presume yours has the vacuum petrol tap mod?
