The brown/blue wire is the supply from the head light shell switch (terminal Hi), it supplies the common terminal to the high/low beam handlebar switch The UK spec bikes had the head light shell switch to accommodate the city light Look up the CD175A 'sloper' wire diagram...very similar set-up.

There is normally 2 generator windings...1 rectified & 1 not. The XL250s/500s uses a combined rec/reg for charging/clock lighting/indicators/ect I have lifted the schematic from the XL500 shop manual, hope that you can see it

It's going tricky this one. Try having a look at the wiring diagram for the Honda MT125 (2-stroke)...similar set up to the XL125s but the diode is fitted very close to the battery.

You could also try Vehicle Wiring Products in the UK for a 4-way blade fuse box (Ref: FBB4T) I used to supply them for RD250/400's a number of years ago.

Good explanation. I have always found the accuracy of readings to be problematic (fluctuations) with budget digital multi-meters...I'm not sure what make/model/meter that you use, or could recommend?

The main wire harness part No. 32100-443-000 fits both models. There is also a rear lighting sub-loom, part No. 32200-443-000 that also fits both models.

Pity no one stocks the connector boots (black dip-moulded pvc covers) they are expensive to have manufactured Please Note - Vehicle wiring products do not stock the replica OE latched 6.3mm connectors for classic Honda's

The electrical connectors on the 1970's models would have had 3.9mm bullet & socket connectors & possibly 6.3mm latched block connectors (for additional lighting) The early 1980's models where fitted with 2.8mm latched block connectors. Cable size 1.00mm...nothing smaller

According to the Clymer manual readings as below (CB500F/550F) - Field coil (white wire to green wire) the reading should be 4.6 to 5.0 ohms. Stator windings (3 x yellow wires) readings between each yellow wire 0.35 +/- 10% Obtaining an accurate reading (0hms) of the stator windings can be problematic due to dirty contacts and cheaper end resistance meters. Ask Steve if you can borrow his AVO meter
