CB500/550 / HD Cam Chain
« on: November 12, 2025, 11:17:39 PM »
Been putting a 500 engine together with the best bits of two engines and a some new items. Re-bored cylinders (thanks Bryan), clutch plates. some new bearing shells and a DID HD cam chain (courtesy of oddjob).
Affixed the head today and all went well. And got the cam chain on the sprocket OK. But to lift the sprocket onto its location on the cam I had to lever it and bang into place. The chain is now so VERY VERY tight.
Is this OK? Will it loosen up/damage bearing surfaces/snap? Afraid to continue.

Misc / Open / Hondabond, Threebond, Wellseal
« on: August 31, 2025, 04:06:42 PM »
Looking to buy some sealant for crankcases and the like and when you search Hondabond a variety of sealants turn up.
Had some Threebond 1215 (I think) some time ago and that did a good job. Have some Threebond 1104 (rubber based), but that's gone off. I see Hondabond HT is silicone rubber based and thought I was supposed to steer clear of that.
Is Wellseal any good? What about Yamabond 4 or 5?
Thanks

Anyone seen the new chargers for buyers from private sellers coming. Seems there is a 4% charge +£0.75 to be added to items listed by private sellers. So in reality they have moved the charges from the seller to the buyer over these last two charges. Also think there will be a delay in payment until the item is delivered.

CB500/550 / Candy Garnet Brown
« on: February 26, 2024, 05:07:19 PM »
Looking for criticism and sources for paint.
I have an old tank that I have de-rusted and filled a few small dents. It is not really worth spending money on a professional finish as it will be another spare. I have sprayed a few bikes, but that was 40 years ago! And fifty years ago I bought a new 500 (my avatar) in candy garnet brown, so that is the colour for this one.

1.   Spray with etch primer because that’s what our factory sprayer did first when I was working. Do I need this?
2.   Spray with epoxy primer. Final light rub down.
3.   Base coat. What do I need?
4.   Spray candy garnet brown all over. How much paint do I need. 500ml seems enough.
5.   Cure.
6.   Mask for black panels at side of tank.
7.   Spray black.
8.   Cure.
9.   Apply striping decals.
10.   Spray 2K lacquer. I know it’s nasty stuff.

Intend to use aerosol rattle cans for steps 1, 2, and 10.
Will also do a test piece as I progress to check paint compatibility.
This has been on here before, but looking for sources and recommendations for paint. I only remember RS paint.
Thanks for any info/advice.

Low miles. Looks original front tyre. (although axle clamp incorrectly fitted)

When I started getting back into SOHCs in 2003, bikes were rare. Now there seem very common.

Misc / Open / Speedo and Tacho dashpot?
« on: September 24, 2021, 10:46:33 AM »
Can someone explain how the dashpot on the tach and speedo meter works?
Have a tach apart. The needle is driven up by a fight between the magnetic coupling at the bottom and the coiled spring on the shaft. That bit seems simple. Above the spring is the dashpot. What goes on in there? The dashpot itself seems fixed to the shaft as does the needle above it. So it all moves together.
Plus tips for refilling with silicone oil.

CB500/550 / CB500 Fork Damping
« on: May 20, 2021, 11:28:21 PM »
Have the forks off my 73K1 as they seem to rattle and crash about over speed humps and the like. Found one spring is about 4mm longer than the other and one of the dampers feels uneven when I pull the rod up/down. I also have a spare fork set, so will mix and match the best bits.
The damper is a one piece assy with the long rod that attaches to the top cap. K0, K1s and some CB450s. Presume the damper wears, is there any way to service?
Also this is listed by wemoto for K0 but presume it is not suitable.

CB500/550 / Replacement Sleeving for Wiring Loom
« on: June 14, 2019, 03:51:06 PM »
I need to replace the sleeving for the main harness that goes from under the tank to the headlight bucket. It's about 18mm diameter I think.
Anyone have a recommended supplier? I only need a couple of feet.
