The Gates pipe is 6 mm, I used spring clips for safety.

Ted, the part number on the 550 is the 8mtr bulk role, which if you order in UK is over £200!
Thats why i bought from Japan on fleabay

Different to the 500 then Bryan, the two petrol pipe part numbers in my downloaded manual are shown as:-

95001-55180-40 (detailed as 5.5 x 180)
95001-55300-40 (detailed as 5.5 x300)

Presumably as you say not now supplied except in a roll.
I used replacement Gates Petrol pipe as previously fitted to the 500 I bought from you. (Gerben supplied?)

On my 400/4 three carb sliders that hold the main jet were seized solid in the Carb body due to standing unused for some 10 years. I tried Diesel,Carb cleaner & a variety of solvents to release them without any success. At that time I did not own an ultrasound cleaning bath.

In the end I soaked them overnight in fresh petrol in a plastic type food container with the sealed clipped lid.
After about 12 hours the petrol turned  brown, I renewed the petrol repeating the process for several days. Two freed off in the first 36-48 hours or so. The last one iirc took 4 days to free off using just hand pressure to push them out, I did not want to risk any damage. I used Carb cleaner & Brasso wadding afterwards to clean/polish the inside of the carb body.

I would be interested in any observations or insights as to why Honda  would bother making the change or if it was model specific.

Can't help noticing these things and curiosity gets the better of me.

Regards
Dave

I have a spare set of 400 carbs that came off an early 400, the one with the rear footrests on the swingarm the lever is marked CHOKE.
My S plated 400 has the same choke lever marked CHOKE with the arrow pointing in the direction to apply the choke.

It strikes me that marking the lever OPEN with an arrow is vague, a choke is usually described as either OFf or ON. Possibly marking a choke as OPEN was a translation error, quickly corrected in production.

Be interesting to know if any members have the lever marked OPEN.

Welcome to the sohc community Neil

I'm 77 now, it's pulling my bikes on the center stand that makes me feel old.

Great advice from everyone but please let me know how far you can pull your brake lever back before it becomes difficult so the gap between the handle bars and the lever as I said be for mine geo is around 15 mm just interested to see what gap other people had after bleeding their brakes.

My 400 has the DS replacement master cylinder, I use Silicone brake fluid, the flexi pipe was new in 2021,  the gap between the bar grip and the lever at it's closest point is 4 cms with the lever  pulled in hard.
Its a really solid front brake, not spongy.

Is the bush on the swing arm central and fully home?
How does the top fitting alignment look, is the damper unit nice and perpendicular in the frame axis if you get my drift?

I would start by checking the voltage from the ignition switch and work my way using the wiring diagram following the ignition feed  wire all the way to the coils.

I've used this firm on Abbey Street a few times over the latest 10 years for Chrome Plating, excellent job, turn
round time was long as they seem too always have a lot of work in hand.

The discussion on engine posters reminded me of a unique poster I used to own of an Opel Aero GT that never made it into production. It was a press release type poster of a the Aero version with a sectional view of the body & engine IIRC.
It differed from the Opel GT model as it was more like the Lotus Europa at the rear end.
Sadly after my divorce in 1978 the poster was lost.

The Opel GT car made by Opel in LHD only, they had to be collected from Harwich in person by the retailing dealership. I was lucky enough to pick two up from the port and drive them back to Derby. They had popup headlamps that rotated by means of a manual lever that looked like a handbrake! They did not flip up and down like a Lotus but rotated sideways on a vertical pivot. www.carandclassic.com/la/C1903296

They were imported into the UK mainly for US personnel, at bases as well as to employees of General Motors Companies of old like Fridgidare, RR & Associates in Derby etc that built reactors for submarines. Very few were bought by private UK buyers due to it being LHD.

It would have looked good on my garage wall today.https://flic.kr/p/nY8n6w

My BiL has given me a load of old motorcycle magazines.

I've been reading about Granite City Breakers, aka Breaking Points, wondered if they are still trading.

CB350/400 / Re: Gearbox Stuck - The last straw?
« on: December 18, 2025, 07:47:40 PM »
The problem turned out to be the secondary drive gear bolt; a quick visit to my friendly mechanic with the engine solved that.

The good news: I found the problem!

The bad news; well not really bad, but definitely ANNOYING!

Happy it is something so simple; mad that it was something so simple!

Now the quest to find a replacement. Anyone?

You mention  a secondary drive gear bolt, is that as well as the neutral switch.
If it was just the neutral switch that is extra annoying as that can be replaced without splitting the engine case.
