Were you aware that there is a Honda special tool for the clutch adjuster on the 500-4 Nige. The big slotted thing in the drive chain cover. Might also fit the drain screws, never tried it but seem to recall it’s a multi bladed tool

You’re welcome Gaz, I’m pretty good at finding stuff others struggle to find.

My 1971 CB500 has 423000 kms on it, my 1972 one has 268000 kms. Both are still using the same carbs it came with from new. No jets have been replaced on either. Although the 71 one had the main jets changed when it was being raced but back to the old ones when I stopped. They’ve occasionally leaked from the overflow but never when leaded petrol was available. Both banks have been apart a few times for maintenance and painting.
If you can’t find a float bowl in a few weeks Neil let me know. I have a bank of carbs which I’ve broken for spares lying about. However my medical condition isn’t the best at the moment so I’d prefer not to have to rummage in the garage if I can help it.
Where in the UK are you Neil? I think I’ve asked that before for some reason. Maybe alter your profile to include it?

Are you 100% sure you will retain your bike license with a pacemaker fitted Ted? The medical questions on a license renewal these days specifically ask if you have one fitted so they must consider it some form of risk.
Waiting to see a Cardiologist myself, my ICU stay last year appears to have damaged my heart, still waiting to see how bad it is and whether it’s just damaged the wall or killed it.
Good luck either way, ring me if you ever feel the need to talk. I can talk for hours as we both know 😊😊

Go to a main supermarket and the dental hygiene section. Buy an assortment of Interdental brushes. Use these to clean out the jets along with some carb cleaner. The bristles are nylon and will cause no damage.

I should clarify Bryans comments. It’s only the 550K3 which has different intake rubbers than the 500, the 550F has the same as the 500. It’s due to the different carbs fitted to the K3, which were PD carbs. The 500 and 550F share essentially the same carbs.

The lower number shows as the rubber mount for me Al.
Try CMS

Looks more like the clutch safety switch to me Al. See if the 550f lists them separately

The VT has a combined rec/reg like most modern bikes. Although it is 40 years old this year. I wonder how it would charge on say an Optimate or would it not need to have a battery tender.
Good to hear Ian although 13.4v seems a little low

It’s the same length as the standard 500/550 battery Ian, slightly thinner but quite a bit shorter. The problem I can see will be whether the existing cables will reach. Neg should be ok but will the pos reach?
You could stand it on a block of foam, same for the back, just a thin sheet of foam to make sure the strap holds it securely.
Good find, not heard of these before. Might try one in my VT1100C as it needs a new battery.

I do remember seeing somewhere that a slight push on the indicator stem means the power runs down one wire and a full push means it runs down another. No idea why they did this, may be something to do with the running lights on US models. Maybe check what wires are coming out of the switch and see what does what.

The point I was trying to make Nige was that IF the float needles were leaking or the float height was incorrect then that 5 min wait could be making things much worse or even be the source of the problem.

No problem mate. You’ve learned something new so not a wasted day.
Btw, if your fork top nuts are very rusty, and most are, you can buy some polished stainless steel ones these days for probably less than genuine Honda ones. Just for info.
