CB500/550 / CB550 Lost Ignition - Help Needed
« on: January 14, 2025, 01:59:21 PM »
Hey folks,

Having a little problem with my 78 CB550...

Yesterday when I turned the ignition key on, no lights illuminated, until I flicked the key off and on again. Today i can't get the ignition to come on at all.

I popped the plug from the back of the ignition and bridged the wires to bypass the switch and there were no changes - the bike is still playing dead.

All battery connections look clean and free from corrosion, and I can't see any blown fuses.

Any ideas?

CB500/550 / Tyre sizes

What are the largest tyres I can fit on the CB550 whilst retaining the original front and rear mudguards.

And, does anyone have any photos or 500/550s with chunky tyres?

Thanks in advance.

CB500/550 / Front Spokes required
« on: March 05, 2023, 08:05:57 PM »
Hey there,

I had an incident the other day with a front wheel lock - it snapped 4 nipples and bent 4 spokes. The bike is a Cb550k with the twin disc conversion on the front.

Does anyone know where I can buy individual spokes? It seems like a waste to order an entire pack for £90. Potentially I can straighten the spokes and just order nipples, if that's an option?

I'm based in East London, and would be up for taking it to a shop for someone to complete the repair, if someone can advise on a mechanic.

Thanks in advance

As above.

I've got a new CB550k project that I'm working on at home. Would be nice to know of good bike mechanics in the area, or friendly bike people that are local.

Thanks,

Today I picked up my first motorcycle for the road. A 1978 CB550k.

I found an old advert on Facebook marketplace, naff photos, no details in the ad. I thought it would be worth sending a quick message with an offer (the ad was 16 weeks old) - now here we are.

The condition is beautiful. It has 11 former keepers, and 37k on the clocks, which I think might be a lot for a bike? who knows.

The plan is to service it, change a few bits such as the massive indicators, and huge caravan-esque rear light, get a smaller metal numberplate. I initially wanted to turn this into a brat style bike, but I have fallen in love with it's originality. It also helped that I spotted a bike online that manages to keep the original features of the guards and seat, whilst tidying it up the rear end.

I'll work on it over the next couple of months - aiming to have my license by March.
