CB500/550 / Stand spring slack ?
« on: November 26, 2022, 09:34:40 AM »
So I had the centre stand powder coated and managed to stretch the ends of the old spring - no problem ordered a new genuine one

Used the coin method and got the new spring on and tbh I think it is too loose .... the stand doesn’t hold tight against the exhaust and “floats” easily

I’m worried that when riding if it will bounce around

Not sure what I’ve done as I only extended it to get the coins in and then pulled them straight out ? Will the spring tighten up ? Or should I just order another

Not sure if you can see from the 2nd picture - it doesn’t reach the rubber pad on the exhaust at all

CB500/550 / Chain adjustment question
« on: October 30, 2022, 12:56:43 PM »
When I changed the swingarm I noticed the chain was quite slack so adjusted it on fitting the new swingarm.

Went for a run and came back - checked things over and noticed the chain was again slack - no problem I must have not tightedned everything ... so adjusted again ....

Now something made me spin the wheel and check the play at different points on the chain - and it varies from too tight / too loose / just right

Am I correct in thinking the chain probably wants changing due to stretch etc

If so any recommendations as to make / supplier

Thanks

« on: October 14, 2022, 07:56:41 PM »
We all know one is never enough so I started looking for a stablemate for the CB500 ........

And here she is ..... very different but I'm sure will complement the Honda

Haven't got it in my hands yet as ofcourse it is 300 odd miles away :)

CB500/550 / CB500 casings .... bit of a polish
« on: October 07, 2022, 08:57:06 PM »
So I picked up a spare set of casings for the bike with a view to polish them and swap them onto mine .... the existings ones are good but suffer from staining and corrosion.

Quickly realised I had neither the tools / knowledge to do them myself and when Julie suggested Briteworx (Harry) who was fairly close to me I took the plunge.

Dropped them off and had a good natter with Harry who didn't give a turnaround but said if he needed a change of scenery from some of the very intricate bits he was doing they may get to the top of the queue !!

Fast forward to today and I got the call they are ready and pictures to boot - got to say what a fantastic job - the cases provided weren't the greatest and have come up better than I could have possibly hoped for - the bike isn't a concourse example and never will be it is rather nice and these will only enhance it.

These are quick video links of the after polishing ..... not sure on quality as I'm not really social media savvy :)

CB500/550 / fuel pipe check ..... 950013500160M
« on: October 01, 2022, 09:34:56 AM »
So I ordered the bulk 1m fuel pipe to replace the rather old looking ones on the bike - part 950013500160M

Is it me or is it too small both in size and internal diameter ?

Thought I best check before wrestling with fitting !!

Thanks

CB500/550 / Carb balancing - stupid question ......
« on: September 21, 2022, 05:24:02 AM »
Morning

Before I balance the carbs ... a question about connecting an auxillary fuel tank.

The 500 has two fuel pipes whereas the 550 had one .. do i need to feed fuel to both pipes using some sort of Y connector ?

Yes I know - basic question :)

Thanks

Misc / Open / New BSA Gold Star .... bit of a let down
« on: September 01, 2022, 08:44:08 PM »
So decided to have a look at the BSA Goldstar as there is a dealer 5 minutes away .......... had watched some you tube vids  etc and thought it worth a look in the flesh.

Was decidedly unimpressed - yes I know it is cheap but the finish really does make the most of that cheapness IMO ... cases are all powdercoated in some thick looking horrible grey paint and the exhaust finish just spoils it .....

The biggest letdown was seeing the radiator up close - it looks huge and never seems to be photographed in the ads etc in a real life - in your face - real sort of way.

The rest of the bike looked OK but put next to an equally cheap Royal Enfield Continental GT (yes I know £1000 more) but they are night and day different finish / looks wise.

So disappointed even turned down a test ride :)

I know everyone likes different things and some may love the looks but I think BSA have really missed the mark ..... did I mention that water cooled monstrosity up front :)

CB500/550 / Well that was a surprise .....
« on: August 21, 2022, 12:09:07 PM »
Thought I'd adjust the cam chain today and was surprised when I took the cover off to find my points missing and this in their place ........ can anyone identify it ?

I'm presuming my recently ordered Hondaman system is now defunct  ::)

CB500/550 / Back with a 500 ....
« on: July 30, 2022, 10:45:32 AM »
Back in the fold after the effects of the last couple of years left me without a bike .....

Just picked up this rather nice 500/4 .... always room for improvement and I probably paid a little too much but NOS Honda pipes and seat a few years back ... and well it looks nice :)

Cheers

CB500/550 / Odd rev counter behaviour - suggestions
« on: June 22, 2020, 12:42:47 PM »
Afternoon

Spanking NOS rev counter fitted to replace the incorrect one previously fitted - the latter I suspect not accurate at much anything above idle :)

Now I was the first to accept that my bike wasn't set up well enough to red line at will ...... seems I was doing it a disservice :)

I have noticed that the counter seems to stop around 5k and even when the bike seems to be revving rear maximum it stays there ... unless you are extending the time at high revs - then it jumps up to 7/8k

So today I paid attention to engine sound v rev counter and yep - sticks at 5k for what seems an age before registering, what I presume, is the correct revs

An added feature is that if you wait and are suddenly registering say 7k .... if you keep it at this the counter then drops to 5k and wavers then between 5/6k .... even though the engine is still doing the initial registered 7k.

So - I haven't done anything yet to cable / bit where it goes in to the engine as I thought I would wait for some pointers - perhaps it is a known feature to someone :)

Hope that makes sense !!

Thanks

Simon

CB500/550 / CMNSL exhaust - should I be worried ?
« on: June 05, 2020, 04:59:52 PM »
Afternoon

Had my new exhausts fitted for a few hundred miles and when cleaning have noticed that there is a bit of weld missing which is allowing a small leak where the header meets the silencer.

I realise that this is a small thing - should I be worried as to the longevity of the exhaust etc ?

I've raised a support ticket

Thanks

CB500/550 / Stupid question of the day - PD carb balancing
« on: May 29, 2020, 11:15:22 AM »
Ok - so thanks to Ken I’ve a carbtune carb balancer and I’ve pipes / fittings on the way ....

All the videos I’ve seen show I presume the older carbs with the screw on the manifold and adjustment done via visible lock screws.

I don’t have either so am I right that the gauge connection is the screw in the picture and adjustment is under each carb top cap ?

Yep basic I know

Thanks

Simon
