Whilst reading some back missues of Classic & Motorcycle Mechanics I came across this article in the March 1998 edition about the CB650. When I looked on the sohc site there had not been a post about this model in over a year. Made me ask what memebers here think about the CB650, It might have been overshadowed by the CB750, sounds as though it ought to be a great bike if the leap from CB400 to CB500/550 is any sort of comparison. # # March 1998 CB650 1 by Macabe Thiele, on Flickr # March 1998 CB650 2 by Macabe Thiele, on Flickr March 1998 CB650 3 by Macabe Thiele, on Flickr March CB650 4 by Macabe Thiele, on Flickr # #

I owned a standard 250 Dream that I later replaced with the Super Sport version. If Im honest the standard Dream (squareish headlamp) was a much easier ride, with the 250 Super Sport version I was forever changing down a gear or even two gears if there was a headwind. My mates 305 did seem to pull better, he was always infront of me on a ride out.

Iirc the 305 has a 180 Deg crank, as a result two firing strokes are closer together so it never sounds as if it's revving as fast as it actually is.

The bloke I bought my 400NA SD from recommended it to me. Id never heard of it before, that said I don't dislike the blueing effect.

Iirc the 305 Super Sport has a 180 Deg crank rather than the usual parallel twin set up. As a result the two firing strokes are so close together at higher rpm that the sound and the rev counter made you think the rev counter was inaccurate.

I guess the amount of overlap on the wrap is where the skill lies.

I owned an Arial Arrow sometime around 1965, I loved the two circular plumes of smoke from the rear silencers when you gave it some welly.
I was returning home from a ride out with my mate who at the time ran a Triumph Tigress 250 Scooter, as we were approaching a junction my Arrow lost its ability to move forwards, as if the final drive had failed. It also sounded odd, the clutch seemed to feel normal, all the gears seemed to select but no forwards motion.
At some point I decided to switch off the engine for closer investigation. It would not restart so it was a push home of about a mile. Engine was removed but I could not remove the crank from the casing, transpired they had some sort of coupling in the center of the crankshaft that had failed. Lots of metal in the bottom of the engine. The reason the engine would not start was that the kickstart was not rotating the cylinder that had the points/magneto.
I managed to find a brand new Golden Arrow Engine advertised in the local paper at Matlock for a very reasonable £30. On collecting the engine I recognised the seller as working in the parts department for Derby bike dealer. Only later did I wonder if the engine was a knock off.

I agree with Micky, I also share your views I suspect about Soldier F. The difference between the way the IRA are treated by HMG for past crimes following the GF agreement appears in sharp contrast with the pursuit of our troops involved in the same conflict.
Meanwhile Gerry Adams has been able to persue civil claims against anyone who dares to say he was a member of the IRA, I have always thought the line between the IRA/Sin Fein was written in invisible ink during the era of the troubles. Anyway nice bike you have BTW to stay on topic.

Worth trying 400fourbits.co.uk parts not priced, Steve does respond to email within a day or so, I have found his prices fair.
Its an old site so you need to trawl through the parts categories.
