Can someone tell me about the panching plates and element that appears to sit underneath the air filter in the airbox.
My bike is naturally missing these parts and I think I can source some used panching plates but the element B - 17352-377-000 seems NLA.
What exactly is this part for? Some sort of additional filter? Oil trap?
Is there anything available that can be used as a substitute?
Thanks in advance.
Peter.

Its explained here from the Service Manual (all manuals are on this site in my Dropbox BTW)
Unless you are a purist, my advice it to forget about it or pay the likes of 'bikepusher' on eBay a fortune for the missing parts. Or wait until Yamiya repro them

Cool, thanks. Looks like an oil trap then for recycled air.
Afraid I haven't printed off the service manual yet so it's not always easy to find information in the documents.
Thanks, Peter

I make my own out of a kitchen sponge/ scourer thingy. The foam is a similar density to the original and I just cut it to size and shape with a scalpel. Does the job a treat and you can get 4 out of one scourer.

What a great tip. Thanks a lot.
However, I now need to think of an excuse when kitchen scourers go missing ;D

You were born a decade or two, too late Julie ..you would have got a 50p prize 'top tip' in MCM 'back in the day' for that idea ;D ;D Would that be a standard scalpel or a muscle scalpel?

I use a big meaty No.2 Scalpel Ash but a Stanley blade works just as well. I do remember having MCN deliverd weekly in the late 70's but don't remember the 'top tips'. My parents used to despair at me as I had the newspaper delivery boy deliver MCN and my younger Sister had some girlie comic called Twinkle delivered 😃😃😃

As an exiled Yorkshireman, desperately saving up to become a Scotsman, I love the idea of '4 from one scourer' :)

😃😃😃 Tight git. You can make it go even further by giving the scratchy bit to your Wife to clean the pots and pans.

GIVING the scratchy bit to my Wife, do you think I'm made of money?

Joking aside,
If you do make your own element just make sure that what ever foam you use is open cell not closed cell otherwise the case will fill with oil. You can tell the difference by blowing through it.

Best stuff to use is from a fish pond filter!

What is panching?
I used scotchbrite pad.
