Welcome Tony.
It will be interesting to see how close your estimate of time was when the restoration is done!
Fire away with questions as you come up with them, there is a wealth of information available from members on here.
And as you may already have noticed we love pictures here - before, during and afterwards.

It doesn't matter how long it takes Tony, as long as you do it to the best of your ability and the bank balance will allow, have fun along the way and end up with a safe bike.

Hi Tony.  Just up the road!

Julie - this looks OK to me (as a mere 500 owner...) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_CB400F

Haha, your right Steve, they must have changed the picture, it used to show a CB400/4 with non spoked wheels

May be able to help with a front one, or just a hub if you want to rebuild with a new rim - it depends what you need.
From your earlier post does that mean that you have cast wheels?

They look like they're from an XS Yamaha. I had a 500 once with XS400 alloys.

Pretty sure they are aftermarket, I have seen similar ones fitted before to 400's but don't know the make (maybe ERA?).
There is probably a maker's name on a spoke or rim somewhere.
Think Yamaha ones are seven spoke, not six.
There is probably a market for these if you want to get rid of them, or keep them as a period accessory - depends on how original you plan to go.
Also clocks look like Superdream.

I will be getting rid as I want spoked wheels as per the original.

Will start stripping her down Friday !

Hi Mike, thanks for the advice, so here goes :

One seat
Two wheels
Kickstart shaft
Wiring loom
Side panels and a front mudgard

And that's before I strip the engine and carbs  !!!!!!!

Is that yours Steve ?

It was mine for a few years. At the time I had three 500/4s and had to reduce down to one when I moved house.
I sold it to a local guy who wanted it for his dad!

Hi all

Just a quick question.

Did the 1976 400 4 come with cast wheels ?

Thanks

Not unless it was one of the Harrier specials put together by one of the dealers (Mocheck?) with Lester (Or was is it CMA?) Alloys, a small nose fairing, white paint and a 2/4 seat iirc?

May have also been 460cc?

The dealer bikes never had those wheels fitted but Honda set up a race series in the U.K. using Japanese 400's that have a 398cc engine and those wheels where fitted to those machines and available as aftermarket parts for sale to people who wanted to fit them to a road bike. I read this information after I bought a set for my 400 they are made by A.R.E.

Cheers....Dave

Hi Dave

Good choice Tony.....I have the original spoked wheels but the cast ones are my first choice. They cost me 50 quid new from a shop via eBay during my restoration what a steal! I've had my 400 since 1980 and at the time a new set of cast wheels was more than the cost of a second hand bike!

Cheers....Dave

Starting the strip in earnest tomorrow morning, so brace yourself for 100 and 1 questions !
Title: Re: New member

I agree, good call on the wheels. They should clean up or refurbish nicely.

I noticed a wiring loom was on your list of parts you needed.
If you strip it off the bike and think it is salvageable there are threads on here about repairing them including cleaning muck off in the dishwasher.
Steve at 400fourbits (http://www.400fourbits.co.uk/) says he has one for spares with some good connectors if needed to splice in to the original, but new connectors also seem to be available.
DS want £150 for a new one so worth a try to salvage the one you have.

I've just had a look;  there's a LH sidepanel and a tachometer up for grabs.  There's also a rear hub but you're going for the cast wheels.

Hello Tony, good luck with the resto! I can see from your pic you also have what looks like a set of Koni rear shocks. Those can be refurbed,I did mine they share the same internals as car shocks mine only needed a new O ring and oil change. A good polish and they are as good as new.

Cheers....Dave

Remove all the engine bolts except the two lower ones (just loosen those) ,  remove the exhaust,  jack the engine up so it tilts forward.   That'll give another 20mm to play with.

Hi all

Engines out and most of everything else striped, just struggling to remove the front disk, it's on a cast wheel as previous pictures.

Have removed the four retaining  bolts but still no joy !

On another note, found lots of bits of metal in the sump, so not looking forward to the full engine strip !

Will attach som pics later !
