When I bought my Honda the original 4 into 1 front pipe & collector box came loose with it but no silencer - chrome work is not bad but there is a bit of a scuff/dent on one of the original looking pipes.
The bike was fitted with what looks like a complete Motad (RIP) system that is almost as new.
There is only one exhaust clamp fitted with very little in the way of space to fit a normal clamp on the remaining pipes. Not sure how Motad intended them to seal - some sort of super cement ??
I guess the purists would cringe at the arrangement but it will have to do methinks. Whilst waiting for the fuel pipe I ordered today I will do a bit more cleaning of the fuel tank. Picture shows the bendy route that the front pipes take.

Motad wasn’t mine was it??


Sold on eBay early summer a complete system in almost new condition as didn’t really think the Motad style / sound suited the CB400F look, but yes there was only one clamp on one of the headers and all four joints leaked like a sieve

Again the purists won’t like it but fitted a nice Dekelvic stainless system

It’s a nice system and uses a spring on each header to hold the headers in the single collector section
Sounds soooo much better with one of these home made tail bits fitted too

Makes me feel like a rebellious teen again 
and is nice match for the sound / noise my Higspeed GP pipes make on my rd

And cost for the Delkevic was really competitive too

Back in the 80s I must have fitted about 5 Motads to various bikes. Mainly because they were affordable, also they didn't block the access to the oil filter like some others, and they weren't stupidly loud like most of the other aftermarket systems.

Motad was the most common aftermarket exhaust closley followed by Dunstall, both about half the price of a Honda sytem(this was same for all the Japanese fours). Neither systems had clamps for front pipes and relied on carbon build up to seal.

Thanks for the comments everyone some great pics too - I too like the look & sound of a nice exhaust I put Goldstar silencers on my Triumph 21 back in the 60's! A distant friend of mine worked as a fabricator welder at Motad the Industrial Unit was in the Ilkeston/Ripley/Heanor area I think one of a couple of manufacturing units they had - he was made redundant just before they shut.
My favourite exhaust look was that on my Ariel Leader when you opened up the throttle and two swirls of smoke came out of the rear silencers.
Al I like the look of the Dekelvic system - the springs are an interesting way to hold the pipes in.

springs are pretty common. My old Harris system had them, Allows for some flex
