I volunteer at our RSPCA and have just refurbished a pan AK-KO ride on mower we were donated (much fun and a longer story).
I need a starter battery for it and wondered if any members have a old one knocking around that is not totally goosed.
Currently it has a NP 7-12 battery but it has rubbish CCA rating so although it starts it once it doesn’t recover fast enough to start again. Either that or it’s just duff (I am no battery expert).

That's a "back up" battery, the characteristics of which are to sit for long periods without draining and be maintained periodically with a slow and low charge. Start cranking is not it's fortè so it's probably healthy but in the wrong application to function well.
You'd need a automotive equivalent to fit same space but supplying the cranking current needed for multiple starts.
Wondering if you've got the manual specification to give a battery id, I've nothing suitable to offer.

Difficult to be specific without details but you could try looking here https://www.tayna.co.uk/lawnmower-batteries/varta/ as you can input size in mm etc for the application.
Looks like lawnmower applications are in the 14 to 20 ah range though, but more "active" in that the one fitted is more likely to be seen in burglar alarm back up duty.
A further thought, the link company may be worth a question to them as enquiry if they have anything suitable, like a returned unit that they'd consider for charitable donation.

I would have thought for a ride on mower likely to be in the 30A range 330cca such as the Yuasa UR1 garden battery or equivalent little electric start mowers tend to use alarm type batteries
-
I think I need something around 50 CCA as it’s only a small 6.5hp engine
A used bike battery for any old bike would be fine I think
-
Hi Paul what would the right one cost new?
-
Any dimensions Paul?
Hi Ken
Exact size does not matter really anything around
Length: 150mm x Width: 80mm to 100mm Height: around 100 to 150 mm

How about £6 from 10 members for a nice new one for the RSPCA?!

Think that’s way over the top it’s for the big AL-KO ride on, ours is a small one with a small 6.5hp Tecumseh engine
Something like this would suit fine I think

Donations are not done via PM's, they are done via the donations box at the top of the page ::)

These are for a battery for the RSPCA equipment. Is that allowed?

Please don’t use the “Donate†feature for collecting money for charity. It will only result in double PayPal fees which are quite high on small amounts.

Great result. Keep up the good work and watch your speed on that mower!

Steve PS thanks for pointing that out. I never fully understood PayPal fees.
I note that sending via PayPal to friends and family using a linked bank account seems free, but using a linked credit account charge 2.9%.

Plus 30p per transaction.
