I can see loads of muck on the insides of the oil strainer unit - if I attempt to remove the plastic type ring around the guaze will it all break or are they made to be dismantled ?

I don't think they can be dismantled. Just wash it through from the outside of the mesh , then let it dry before using.

They do come apart and the strainer and the body are separate part numbers. But, you most often wreck the strainer when trying to get them apart.

I do not like the look of the muck on the inside funnel shaped part of the striiner might check availablity befor I wreck it?
DS show it as discontinued - might try a bottle brush from the inside with some petrol.

I've got a spare one if you do wreck it. Spray some degreaser or paraffin down it to loosen things up, then
wash it through.

No longer available Ted, either from DS or CMS.
I always soak ours in the parts wash for a few days, rince out thoroughly with parts wasb fluid or diesel and repeat. They always come up nice and clean.

I'll do that Julie just tried a quick petrol wash and it went black immediately so clearly needs a good soak in parts wash - petrol is a bit harsh on the rubber part.

Faced with their imminent extinction :o and if no pattern part emerges to fill the void, can more frequent oil changes be enough to cope with not having one at all?

Aeroslo brake cleaner
Sorry....I don't understand! ;D

Get a can of spare-on brake cleaner. That blasts most muck off.

I suspect it's needed as all cars have them as well as an oil filter- if you have debris in the gearbox for instance (where engine/gearbox share the same oil) it's going to drop into the sump and get sucked into the pick up so a strainer is essential in my view to keep out large bits of metal or rubber etc.
In the complete absence of a replacement I guess it will be a case of adapting one from another engine and joining it to the same end fitting.

It has to be there as the hole it fits into snugly is too high upnfor oil to be reliably sucked in
