Title: Timing light gun/strobe
Post by: billdn on September 09, 2022, 02:34:38 PM
Have recently bought this, see below, and wasn't until it arrived, I discovered that it's not suitable for motorcycles, didn't read all the sales blurb doh.
So, my question is what do you peep's use? Don't want a super duper whizzo jobbie. just something middle of the range, reliable.

Tried it but doesn't pick up on#1 cylinder but does on #4, probably why not suitable for cickles?

Pickup on #4 is fine to time both 1&4 as it's exactly the same timing signal.

These coil being double ended have a pos and neg spark through HT from them, which the trigger will often pick up only one side of.

Just leave it on 4 to time that set of points, then one of the middle cylinder for 2&3 whichever one works.

Also try turning the pickup the other way round

Yeah the Snap On gun I had used to have an arrow on the pickup to say which way it should be fitted, arrow toward the plug BTW. Maybe reverse it like Bryan said and if it works draw an arrow on the top of the pickup.

I bought a Clarke timing light from Machine Mart mostly with some free B T vouchers it was okay for bikes as well as cars. I'm not convinced it was worth buying as the static timing was identical. The only thing it did was make the synchronization easier.

It does allow you to check the advance/retard unit is working though Ted.
