Title: Struggling to buy paint stripper that works.
Post by: McCabe-Thiele (Ted) on October 05, 2022, 04:03:31 PM
I used Starchem paint stripper on my 400 casings but can't seem to be able to buy it online unless I have some sort of HSE safety certification.

Yes it's nasty stuff I wore breathing mask, eye protection, gloves and only applied it outdoors - it was scary stuff but it did a good job after my old formula Nitromors ran out.

Is there a decent brand that works for sale anywhere that a DIY person can buy today?

My e-bay purchase of Powerstrip failed.

My new formula Nitromors does nowt

I've used this Ted, Seem to recall Ash recommended it.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/255715927375?epid=1261136343&hash=item3b89db654f:g:AucAAMXQ3kRQ7Tys&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAAoEe7Wv7q4z9GF33JlXBi9y%2BG8fVbE%2Fhrc27ql%2FOBIzIUp3Mo0QykQ805Y%2BHWN3ExDLMxnJnf%2FvFUOC7%2BvVh4nlvkIFMo%2F9MAUp597O75NWctdU2RqWZuW8h%2FW1vULrnwGjTyftR5yFZdF%2FUmCzkFdtqZ5wnsFKNGaTHbdfedZRQktdDAkfSFyl5FAVRgHZSn98Hw%2BM1xdtOz9nIq2VLD2ck%3D%7Ctkp%3ABk9SR4SAg4z1YA

It says you will be asked for certificate etc but they don't.

It's almost the same as the old Nitromors IMO, stings when you get it on your skin.

Ted, the old Nitromors was decent stuff. I think it was dichloromethane (also known as methylene chloride). The last lot I got was from ebay but that is probably not there now. Alternatively, try an autorefinishers. The stuff OddJob lists is probably the same.....

Got to enlighten you all to something that I haven't tried on an intended paint stripping project!!  I was sorting some of my dad's stuff out and he had a chip pan caked in burnt on oil. I thought ah Mr Muscle oven cleaner... Sprayed it on the outside surface and within minutes the oil was loose but so was the paint! Nasty stuff to breath in etc and probably not safe for use but seemed very effective. Any comments besides "you idiot" perhaps?

If all else fails try gun wash thinners, it can be obtained from Motor Factors at £13 for 5 litres applied liberally with a brush it will remove paint effectively.. If you’re leaving it ‘in frame’ take care to cover all other painted surfaces as it will remove it as well. It can also be obtained from Halfords in half litre tins but two of them cost almost as much as a 5 litre tin. Wear gloves when doing it and plenty of ventilation of you WILL get a headache. I used it to remove the lacquer I’d applied years ago.
