Well folks,
The Shiny Orange 550 F1 I bought from JamesH is now safely in my garage. I am absolutely delighted with it - better than expected and a great basis for a very useable and presentable classic. No doubt I will be asking for advice and help as the project hopefully progresses. Unbelievably, the original virtually untouched tool kit and bag are still in the seat compartment. A couple of things I am looking for, firstly an original or copy owners handbook that goes in the other seat compartment. Secondly, probably more difficult than trying to get an audience with the Pope - yes, an original (even one that's repairable) silencer!

Congratulations, Ian.

Enjoy Ian.

Exhaust, only if you're extremely lucky or know someone who's got one stored in a loft somewhere. Rarer than rocking horse poo.
-
Sounds like you're going to be busy during winter Ian, certainly nice bikes those 550.
See what you mean about exhaust though, one here https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/255815793760 apparently, but at very significant cost :o
-
Exhaust is fine, just the silencer is aftermarket. There is a full genuine system on fleabay for £2995 - eek! Wouldn't dare to even ride the bike with that system on!

Good news Ian. I’ll be up to view at some stage.

Hi Johnny,
Kettle's on! :)

NIce one Ian, enjoy ;)

Hi Roo,
Really chuffed to get the bike home - will make a very useable bike and I have all Winter to fettle it for Spring. Sincere thanks to James! 🍷 It's amazing how colours change from pics to reality. I was convinced that the seat had been replaced or recovered in black but it's the correct dark brown - another result! Plus the presence of a full tool kit - went to bed happy!

Looking forwards to some new pictures - from what I remember it was a well tidy bike.
-
Hi Ted,
Yes, a relatively unmolested example rapidly approaching 50 years old (came from Warminster PA in the US) I don't think James would have started with anything less! I will post some pics but there's some Orkney weather about just now and I would like to have natural light - assuming we get some!
Ian
-
First a new exhaust system, now he wants natural light in Orkney, Jesus Ian you're asking for a bit much these days ;D ;D

Johnny,
Is that 3 cups you're wanting, or one cup with 3 sugars? 8)
Ken, if 'Mike the pipe' was still alive, he would have knocked a system up in stainless in an afternoon - even in artificial light! Where have all the wizards gone?

Good that you have it and I'm sure you'll be pleased. It's great to get something that is relatively unmolested and not pay the earth.
Mine was from DK and I stopped in there when returning from a holiday and was the only bidder when they reduced the start. The downpipes were a little rusty at the top and one has a small dent but they looked ok when cleaned up. Original silencer was pretty shot at both ends.
This was 2017 and one came up on ebay and there were only two bids and I paid £1.20. It was 50 miles each way to collect as he wouldn't post.
A small patch required underneath at the front end.

(camera has distorted colours, but it is original paint)

That's a stunner Phil,
Hope mine looks as good as yours! A great result on the silencer too. I don't mind waiting and using the one it came with for the foreseeable. It's a pity no one seems to do a replica. I want to enjoy riding it so would be reluctant to use that NOS system on eBay! OK for museum perhaps? I've been doing a bit of tidying and general assessment today - still over the moon!

Mine however was scrap😳
-
That's real shame - if the end cap had been sound perhaps a good tin basher could have made a new centre section? Is it an optical illusion or does that centre section have a very slight taper, rather than parallel?
Ian
-
TBH I don’t know. I scrapped it over a year ago…..for this.
-
Haven’t forgotten Ian. Been dealing with this today 😳
-
Hell Phil,
Don't worry about my bit, you need to concentrate on more urgent stuff - health comes first.

Going for the cloven foot look😁.
Oooh, Chevron Osteotomies???
Whatever it was, get back on your feet soon.

Yes, you win the prize Julie. I was hoping you would be along. Known as Bilateral hallux valgus to us commoners. But yes, Chevron….as you state.

Going for the cloven foot look😁.
I suffer from Morton's Neuroma in my gear change foot.
Feels like a cloven foot when wearing normal shoes.😁😁😁

Yes, I know what you mean. Now here’s a thing. Mine was diagnosed using ultrasound. It continued to bother me so I went to see the surgeon. One MRI later and we found out I had a planter plate tear. Needed a very interesting procedure to sort it out. Been done nearly two years without a problem.

Now that fecker really stung post op😭
Back to your rebuild post Ted. Did the wifey protest at your novel use of the oven?
-
And i though Chevron sold petrol

Can't bake the casing until SWMBO goes back to work next week.
Our oven has never been so clean so no risk of contamination from burnt fat etc.
