My 400 never had a re-paint on the tank & side panels as they were in fair condition plus I did not want to put more money into the pit for a bike that is really too small for me.
The 500 build has stalled a little whilst I wait for some front fork lock nuts from DS - I'm trying to budget for the build I want but have no ball park figure for paintwork as I've never had it done.
I'm assuming that the side panels will need a special stretchy paint application as they are a type of plastic. Tank has a dent but inside is very good.
I will not go down the rattle can route with my paint skills as the tank is such a centre piece on a bike.
I want the paintwork to be in a gloss black finish (possibly metallic) what sort of ball park cost is involved please?

I know of a painter not a million miles from you that paints tank and side panels for about £400.
-
One very close to Derby that did Sesman and Grommitdogs tank and side panels for £350. Looked a decent job as well and in Candy paint. Maybe ask Phil or Nigel for details, might be more expensive now due to energy prices going up.

That might be the chap at Ilkeston iirc I have some details somewhere.

Yes, Sean Dewis, I may have given you his contact details before Ted.

Ted, my red 400/4 was painted for me just before Christmas and was £500 and was truly excellent.

Dave supplied all the transfers and said that a lot of the transfers out there were not up to much. (Who am I to know!) I'll post a photo if required....

Be prepared to wait though ... it took him about 9 months to do my CB250K2 paint which was £420 (tank, side covers, fork ears and headlamp shell) .. Excellent job though .. Candy Custom Gold and white tank....pinstripe no decals.

I have just got my paintwork back from Gary at Spraypoint, in Purleigh and I am delighted with it. I sent him my Triumph 650 Tiger tank and front and rear mudguards, to be painted in Blue and Silver with pinstriping and my 400/4 tank and side panels to be painted Parakeet Yellow with the striping, the whole lot was £900, £550 for Triumph parts and £350 for my Honda bits, I did supply the decals for the Honda from Image works.
I have used various painters, ( a few big names in the painting world too), over the years and not been greatly impressed, some leaving dust in paint, blobs of paint, small dents not done, etc. There is always a risk with painters, but I won't hesitate to use Gary again should I need to.
Am out just now but can post a pic or two later if wanted.

Not knocking Gary but those are not candy colours and for candy colours you really need a painter that has experience in applying that type of paint. Gary may have that or he may not, can’t say but it must be said nevertheless

Only trying to help regarding pricing as requested by thread starter.
The Triumph, has a metalflake/candy/ metallic 4 layer, type paint job, as can be seen in the picture, I am not sure if that is classed as a candy job or whatever as it is not my field of expertise and I am quite happy to learn from people with more knowledge on the subject than I.
Without knocking anybody, it has to be said, nevertheless, that it is, in my opinion, a very
good paintjob.

Got to agree, it looks very nice work. I don't spray myself but I have heard a lot from people who say that doing the Honda Candy colours is more of an art form than spraying. Hence why I thought it was advisable to comment.

Spoke to Sean D yesterday he quoted £400 for tank & side panels with white stripe I've asked for gloss black if I drop off mid Feb he should have them done for end March. I've booked them in as far as am able.
-
Nice looking paint job! I would be delighted with that.
-
Hi Ted, do,you intend to do any prep yourself….internal tank cleaning for example and paint strip?
-
Tank is in good condition inside I'm planning to just remove the cap & petcock.
-
Ted,
I have the tank and panels off my 400/4 which I removed and stored when I got it back from my Cousin and fitted my NOS varnish blue set. I'll have to dig them out to check they are still good - they were painted in Ford metallic black - an early 2000 colour methinks. Gold lines like a Velo and Honda Wings

Think its for his %00 build Ian, like those though, that looks ace :)
-
Nice looking paint job Ian.👍👍👍
-
For god;'s sake! '500 build' ::)
-
My mistake Roo,
The very first post refers to the 400 and the 500 project had stalled - I thought Ted was deciding to have the 400 panels re-finished whilst waiting.
