Post by: Davelu88 on February 16, 2023, 08:38:02 PM
Hi iam trying to restore a set of tank badges and although I have got all the old enamel off one of them is a bit marked etc . I painted with umbrol but it looked crap and uneven , has anyone come up with a decent way of painting the letters . Cheers

Doing a set now Dave, if it turns out ok I’ll post a thread detailing how it was done.

Post a pic of the badge so we can see how it turned out, did you paint the white in or use a drop method and allow it to settle flat?

Did you do anything with the gold exterior?

I wanted the badges blacked out for a project I'm doing so I painted the umbrol enamel paint in the letters and then baked them for a bit but the enamel looked very uneven . Look forward to see how yours turn out Ken, do the 750 badges fit on the 550 tanks .

I did some Triumph badges with Humbrol and it took 2/3 coats to get a nice even finish.

It would appear so Dave, they used to have a 323 part number so individual to that bike, however CMS have substituted 300 part numbers so they must be the same dimensions but with a small paint difference maybe.

As said, try a couple more coats and see how they are after that. You can always strip them if you don't like it.

Officialy Honda superceeded the 500 part number to the 750 part number, also they are handed as each is curved differently but most of the big parts suppliers in the 70s only kept one number and you gently reshaped them to fit

The 550 F2 badges are handed as the pin spacing differ left and right.

If they are genuine 500 badges they are stamped 323 on the back.

No matter what I do I do not think mine will look good on a new paintwork so I've just got some decent 750 ones from ebay for a good price and the seller sent me pics of the measurements of pins etc and they match my old ones .
