Wrong colour for UK and US rear mudguard/rear light. still nice runner for somebody but wonder what reserve is
-
I've just pinched a Skittle from my son's sweetie packet, whilst reading this, and it's exactly the same green colour! I love it.
-
Wrong genny cover, off a 550, and what's wrong with the seat lock, sits an a really odd angle. It could be a good buy or it could be a munter all dressed up.
-
Quite like that colour, don’t normally like green anything but that’s rather a fetching shade of a miss match between mushy pea and as described by my elderly next door neighbour, ‘chest infection’ green.
Don’t like the rear mudguard but nice little thing none the less.

Wrong switchgear as well, again off a 550. Never noticed the rear guard Roo, just presumed it was a US version but the light bracket seems to sit very low on the guard and looking at the underside it looks new. I wonder if it's one of the Vietnam copies and they got the hole position wrong, I have a NOS US guard in the loft and I've never noticed the holes being that low down. The US does get much smaller rear reg plates so maybe it's because ours are so much larger it looks odd sitting below the bottom of the guard.

Actually, it isn't too bad a colour.....

My Vietnamese rear mudguard copy sat like that until I elongated the main mounting hole

Reserve is £3k

Reserve is £3k
Of course missed that Matt!
-
Where did you see the reserve Matt? Think as goin blind.
-
I messaged the seller. This is the reply:
Hi Matt I paid £3250 as non runner in August.
Reserve is set af 3k and will take it.
If it makes over 3250 I will charge the winner 3250 as I'm not out to rob or make profit even though I spent £700 so far. Bike runs and is a work in progress and would like to see it on the road in all its glory. It needs attention to clutch and carbs set up correctly (which are myweakness)
Sorry for long winded answer if it just makes under 3k might even take that as i need room to work on Kwak z900.
Offer him £3k or (£3.35k!)if you want it and see if he accepts.... ;)
-
To add, I'm still deliberating as to whether to get a 500 for myself, hence asking the seller (Mark) but it is too early for me to make a decision on a bike at the moment. Good luck to whoever..

£3k is not out of sorts. Trouble is: wheels, paint job, exhaust and the prospect of an engine strip for cosmetic improvements will probably get the turn out cost all the way to £6.5k. And that before you get into the small stuff. I guess it all boils down to what folk are happy with…..which is of course always the way.

I’m not sure exactly what I’m looking for, but I know I won’t be spending another winter with nothing going on the garage.😡😡

Yes I agree! Depends what level you want to restore to. Maybe see what comes along.

You are correct Phil it's the conundrum we all face when buying an old bike with the various different motives behind a purchase.
I did all those sorts of sums before I bought my present 500 - my initial capital cost was not that high - the costs along the way will easily outstrip buying a bike like your old 500 that was very tidy one needing little future expenditure.
One could buy a top end bike for top end money then always have the nagging doubt about the engine if you see a puff of smoke or hear a strange clatter.
When I have finished my 500 I will inevitably part with my 400 (taking a loss) to make space- a part finished restoration sounds an interesting challenge or a van full of parts that need assembly. Trouble is it's a bit like the Buses you miss one then three come along at once after you have hailed a Taxi instead.

I would personally avoid that one, there's a lot more wrong with it than it appears on the surface.

Good advice! Taken!👍
-
I'm guessing there aren't many 500s about now that are complete & original so it's about some compromise when one comes up. Viewing essential before you bid.
-
Yes agree Ted, I’m not frightened of a bit of work or elbow grease but there is not going to be an endless pot of money thrown at my next project. Although with the best will in the world it’s always going to cost more than you think. Somebody said work out roughly what it’s going to cost then double it and add another 50 per cent, then you’re getting close. As for essential viewing, might have to phone a friend.😂

That is very true and tells us we are a bunch of obsessed freaks! But we love it

Now I am fully retired I find I do not need several holidays a year to de-stress from working. I can no longer fly to foreign parts so instead of decades of worthless holiday snaps I have a collection of Honda parts in my garage destined to make a running 500. 🫣
Wendy has her shoe collection that puts my bike part costs in the shade I suspect.😁😁😁
