Title: Cam re profile.
Post by: Laverdaroo on March 17, 2023, 08:20:44 PM
Evening peeps,
As most of you know the bike's in bits again and whilst the lids off I thought it might be a good wheeze to get the cam reprofiled to allow a bit more duration both in and out to improve what midrange there is and basically be a faster bike than Phil's just so I have the mental edge, yer know ;D

Anyway, has anybody had this done and if so where at and at what bonkers cost was it? AND, was it any good post op?

I've sent a message to Newman's but whilst chatting to a few on here a discussion was mentioned with reccomendations and I can remember the thread but cant find it Any avice chap's and chapess's'sss?

I’m about to put in a CB650 cam in my 550, supposed to be a nice performance upgrade.

“Faster than Phil’s”….my arse.  Go for the CB650 profile…£100 quid or so regrind…. Best contribution is the inlets Roo. Port matching and raising the inlet roof and casting removal will achieve the best results. Frankly though, don’t bother.

Cheers all. Yer reckon Phil, or are you scared I'll smoke yer ;D ;D ;D? Yeah, right 8)

I'm interested to see how Steve gets on after his 650  cam install mind? Steve, have you done al the porting required as well or just gone for the cam etc.?I have nothing tho guage against as I've never ridden one but my cam is deffo showing its age and a freshen up wouldnt hurt tbh. If its gonna get a refurb, if poss, I might as well try to get a bot more out of it if material has to be put on, ground off, whatever.

Just a thought ......

Steve. I’m sure you will have noticed, but check the inlet stubs where they meet the head. I couldn’t believe the overlap (step) on mine.  I’m pretty sure doing a quick and dirty matching exercise would be worthwhile.

Roo, Newman is definitely a good shout as not only will he re-profile , but he’ll case harden too.

I was just wondering, will it also be necessary to have the rocker faces cleaned up too?

I dont think the cams are hardened as the rockers are

I bought a spare engine for Lazarus which included a 650 cam and modded head. The previous owner was a bike mechanic and smoothed and ported the head and inlet ports. The 650 cam may foul the head so some metal has been removed to clear. I have used the head but not the camshaft as I heard there is some problem with the tachometer drive being different?

I've used Piper cams in the past in Mini A series engines tbh in the early days they were not as good as BL Special Tuning parts but improved over the decades. Iirc the case hardening was an issue they sorted. The sporty ones used to cause issues with rocker shaft wear due to the extra load from the profiles.

John Webley has a Newman Cam in his CB500/4

I bought a SH cam to use as doner,,
asked Newmans for a "fast" road profile, something to  increase the grunt above 6K.

 it has been succesfull,

the bottom end is still sweet like a pussycat, but as the revs rise it feels better, during normal journeys it breaths better ,cruising between 5 and 6k on less throttle, good fuel economy,60+ to the gallon,

made over taking in 3rd  much better, romps up to 9k,

 cost about £160

Cheers John, that sounds just the thing, did you do any porting work or just the cam install after the re grind?
I’d like a bit more poke but don’t we all, (leave it Phil!!) and really thinking I’ll do this before I put the top end back in. It’s only the duration that changes or are you modifying the timing to suit? Don’t want to open a can of worms and all that…….

  just  fitted the cam,

I think they must grind about 1mm of the base of the cams,

its how Yoshimura started in Japan

Yeah except he probably did it with bamboo, underwater whilst practicing his ninja skills or something bonkers. He was a true alchemist wasn’t he

Cheers John, top info, I sent them an exploratory email last week so I’ll hang on and see what they come back with as a starting point for making a decision.

Much obliged

I was quoted £100-120 for a cam re-profile Roo, this was on Feb 9 2022.

I wanted 5 degree more overlap and 10 degree more duration as it's supposed to wake up the engine mid range. I don't want a cammy engine, just one that's tractable throughout it's range.

I also intend to match the inlet ports and enlarge the roof of the port a little.

Phil did you trim the vac gauge screws so they don't protrude into the inlet tract?

Cheers Ken, building a mental justification for the whole affair as money is running a bit short for the build now I’m towards the end. I’ve still paint and seat to fork out for. Bryan has offered a donor cam so I’m not without if I do send it away so it’s not like it’ll be dormant whilst aesy. I had a quick chat with newmans today as somebody was in the office and gave me a call, they quoted similar costs and about a week turn around depending on severity of wear, etc.

On a plus side, my badges came today so they’re off down to Matt’s when I get two mins to be made smaller and a bit more suited to the bike. For aftermarket, they’re pretty good for the 40 odd quid I paid for them. Heavy though (https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20230318/85e029b28da6b302faa1b09eca2970ef.jpg)

Ask if anyone has any broken badges off the 500 as the orange F out of one of them will most likely fit.

I have some around somewhere but they seem to have gone missing.

Yes it was my daughter but she's not well at the moment and I don't want to pressurise her so I'll wait until she can do some stuff for me. She made me a set of Dominos for Xmas out of resin with the Witcher logo on the back of the Dominos and the box. Really good job she made of it too.

I'll put a pic up if I remember.

Badges are on the back burner whilst I do the bits coming back from Camcoat.

No, Ken. The replacement s/s items were a little shorter. I just rolled the ends on a grinder to taper them. TBH I didn’t spend a lot of time, I just port matched and cleaned up the casting flashing in the inlet ports then raised the inlet roof around the valve entry by a 1mm or so. I left the exhaust alone, apart from removing some obvious casting irregularities. TBH, with no real background knowledge or evidence, I’m not expecting great things…...I took the Tips from Mike Reik on the USA website (think that’s his name).
