Im genuinely shocked, should I be? or is this the going rate. A good friend is getting his Mustang redone in orange, if its close Ill slip my tank in with it.

I do give him the tank basically prepared, he paints, he gives me it back to fit any decals and then he finishes it off

I've also been spoiled for many years. The cost as you know is in the stripping, cleaning, filling, blocking down and getting ready for priming and final coats. All jobs you can do to a very good standard yourself. Yes, the paint itself is now very expensive.
When I was South, I did all the donkey work and a friend who repaired cars mostly, hit the parts with 2 pack high build primer for me to guide coat and block down. He then applied the colour coats and a layer of lacquer. I then scotched that and applied any decals prior to him applying more lacquer.
It didn't take me long to find a similar friendly painter here in Orkney who was happy to do the same.
As long as you realise that the finished article will only be as good as your prep then everyone will be happy.
I also make hooks and methods of suspending tanks, panels, mudguards etc to make their life easy for painting the parts.
I use UPOL filler, etch primer and other materials - if you want to pm me I'll discuss what I do - but not an expert (I've never used water based stuff), just been doing it for about 40 years.

Trouble is Ive no patiance and tend to rush things but needs must, I cant justify that kind of expense.

The thing is YOU are in control and can fart about until it's right. I even occasionally blow a coat of any old rattle can colour to be sure my prep is good enough.
Gary, you'll just have to try to be more patient if you want a good result - remember the story of the old bull and the young bull - young bull says to old bull 'Lets run down this field and screw one of the cows down near the fence'. Nah! says the old Bull 'Lets just saunter slowly down the field and screw 'em all!'
