Title: Are CB Tank's interchangeable ?
Post by: brinkys on July 23, 2010, 12:56:04 PM
I'm after a tank for my CB550, there are lots of tanks on ebay for various other CB's, the question that I have is are the CB tanks interchangeable ie will a CB750, CB500 (T), CB400 etc tank fit on the CB550.

I fitted a CB550K3 seat and tank to my 500/4 (in the avatar)

The tank is a straight swap, but it is larger than the 500 tank so won't really fit with the std seat.
The 550K3 seat fitted on after I modified the mounting brackets for the hinges as they were about 2" too far forward.

Fuel taps different too, the 500/4 has 2 outlets and the 550 k3 ones I have have only 1 outlet on the tank, taps are not interchangable so it's inprovisation time with the pipes if swapping tanks or carbs around, not fun as it's a tight place to route pipes in neatly and kinks or tight clearences = slit fuel lines, rubbed thru fuel lines or fuel starvation, in short a pain in the bum (ive been told that appart from the cost and smell issues of the contents of your tank spillling down your leg that there are safety issues to do with fires but at that stage getting home is normally higher up the list then that)

I have interchanged the tanks between the K3 that I had onto the blue F2 in the past, together with the seats, without any problems.

Have a photo of the bikes like it somewhere.
