I am restoring a CB500k0 USA import. I have fitted the David Silver electronic ignition and will be using a custom loom with a modern combined regulator/rectifier. Retailers seem to be selling both 5 wire and 7 wire r/rs which they claim will be suitable for my bike. Any advice on which version to go for would be appreciated.

Sorry for asking, but what is wrong with your regulator and rectifier now? These original parts are very reliable and usually outlive your bike.

I am a fan of electronic ignition but tbh I would also stay with original rectifier/regulator arrangement.
You mention a custom loom has that been designed for a combined unit? If that is the case is it not a matter of counting your wires?

The original wiring loom and electrics were unusable as a result of overheating / melting at some point in the past.

So when you say Custom you mean an aftermarket replacement so the wiring is original?

The regulator is mechanical and all mechanical things wear, the point faces can pit and go out of alignment or even stick together. Electronic is faster acting and more accurate. Both my reg and rec are good but I'll be replacing them both with a combined electronic reg/rec for those reasons. Try to find one that uses Mosfets

Loom will not be an aftermarket item, will be custom built to suit reduced electrics. Any thoughts on whether r/r should be 5 or 7 wire type?

Go with 7 if you can find it. Easier to understand how it wires in that way.

Thanks for the advice :)
