Just wondering if anyone has used Bonhams Auction at Stafford to sell a bike. If so, what was the service like, and did you get a good price. Also, anyone know what the catalogue price is to get in for autumn 2023, they seem a little bit coy about advertising the price for some reason (can't be free with the show ticket surely).
-
No. Last time I went to Stafford it was £10 catalogue for entry. Kept out the riff-raff like me.
Probably gone up in the last few years. ☹ï¸
-
Thanks, that's probably why they are a bit shy putting the price on the website.

About 5 years ago the Catalogue was £25 Roy. Allows entry of purchaser of catalogue and one other.

I wasn't sure if the boxes still contained the new pipes or if they were the ones fitted to the bike and the boxes were empty. If it did indeed have an extra set of NOS pipes then that would have contributed around £2.5k to the action price IMHO.
-
Good point, I read it as the ones fitted as it had been an unfinished project.
-
OK lets get picky.
1 ignition switch in wrong place
2 grab rail wrong
3 rear indicator mounts wrong
4 no stickers under the side panel badges
5 not that early, they started April 71
6 wrong master cylinder
7 wire outside on rh handlebar
And that is just a couple of minutes looking
-
Yes, and wrong speedo (and seat cover, unless US were different)!
-
No they wernt different, starting to look more like the usual us bitsa all the time!
-
Regarding the Bonhams Auctions Roy......I'd be more concerned at their Fees......
What bike from your lovely stable are you thinking of selling - as you might get a fair offer from a forum Member.....by the time Buyers and Sellers Fees have been factored in, you might not be any worse off selling privately.
-
I can't see the wire outside the bars R/H Bryan.
I spotted a few things.
Claims matching numbers but they ain't. Might be original numbers but certainly don't match.
Seat is far more ripped than they state.
Side panel badges are aftermarket.
Chrome trim missing from tank
Candy Gold was K1 colour not K0, should be Starlight Gold.
Allen keys fitted to cases.
649A carbs fitted, can't remember seeing them before, maybe it's correct for USA though.
Seem to recall the grips being much more spiky, I remember they hurt your hands with no gloves.
Ultra picky.
Wrong plug caps.
Wrong fuel pipe.
Front mudguard damaged on the very front edge
The seat cover for the K0 was different from the K1 and the K2 Jezza.
-
Yes, and wrong speedo (and seat cover, unless US were different)!
Correct seat and seat pattern for a 500 K0, it should have a little sticker on the bottom or the side of the seat pan, if original :)

Blimey, and I thought it looked okay. You guys must have owl eyes.

They have Bryan even picked up some of my wiring colours in my headlamp bowl as being potentially wrongly connected!

Not selling anything at the moment Alan. We have been going to Stafford for years but have never bothered with the Bonham's auction. So it's a fact finding mission this year, were going for both days and stopping over. We just want to know if the auction is worth using after all the fees and not forgetting transporting bikes to Stafford. I highly doubt it will be worth it but you never know.

Or less: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/175887108248
The pipes are wasted on that with the hotch potch of repro parts.
-
I wouldn't go that far. It looks standard, only a real expert would spot the differences. Doesn't make it a bad bike.
-
If it looks like a Duck, Quacks like a Duck, Waddles like a Duck is it fair to say it's a Duck? ;D ;D ;D
-
But does it think it's a duck, it might be a trans-duck, going from a duck to a goose.
-
A sort of Drake-Hen -Duckie. ;D
-
But does it look like the correct duck!
Hoi sin
Hoi sin
Hoi sin

After a couple of hours at Gas Mark 4 it will be fine whatever gender it was.
-
Those pipes on the ebay link say 323 but are actualy 374 as they have all the verbiage on the back. And a righ mix of parts from 50/550 including k3 tank
-

It's not a bad bike to most. But it sold be top dollar. And if repo parts are OK in so many instances then repo pipes would also be fine. Maybe punters were swayed by "Genuine Honda four-into-four exhausts"
I see someone snapped up the pipes.

My friend sold a K6 via Bonhams at Stafford, a bike that previously belonged to me.
He was given a pre - sale estimate by their valuer, and hired a van to take it to the auction for the weekend.
Although a very smart and nice bike that was running and riding well, bidding slowed and ultimately stalled at well below the estimated value. At the time, he was strongly encouraged to accept the highest bid and in the end did so, having taken quite a hit in the process, even without factoring the cost of the auction charges, van hire and hotel.
I must point out that this was a good few years ago now and selling prices were well below those of today, the disappointing thing was though just how different the estimate was from the selling price.

Personally I think the repro pipes for the 500 are superior to the genuine Honda ones. Chrome is better, they are chromed front and back not just front like the originals. Fitment might not be as good but only an expert would spot the difference.
I'm betting the quality of metal is better as well

Don't understand that comment Ken . Do you mean Genuine were not polished front and back ? ... hence duller finish on back . The complete exhaust assembly was chromed IMHO.
-
No, they were sort of painted a dull grey Ash, I remember using paint stripper back in the 80s to remove it so I could repaint it. The rear of the exhaust rusted quite badly compared to the front.

The only paint I have ever seen is around the mounting studs and the joints on multi-cyl downpipes. I have genuine NOS pipes for all of my bikes and they are all chromed on the rear, admittedly with a finish on the rear which isn't highly polished and has a duller appearance
-
You are correct in saying there is paint around the studs. Around the drain hole as well IIRC.
Whatever the finish is on the back, might be zinc sprayed for instance, underneath appears to be bare steel. I seem to remember that Duraglit took the finish off as well, remember that stuff?
That was genuine 323 UK version pipes not the 374 version with the writing on the back.

Mine are 374's but I had a set of decent original 323's that came off a low miler 500K0 that I sold to my mate Jim. They were deffo chrome plated on the back. I don't think zinc plating would have come into it either because the two processes just don't mix. Having said that, I have always wondered if you could brush plate areas of chrome on used parts to protect areas that have had the chrome removed because of corrosion or peeling on areas are not seen when mounted on the bike.

I think it was aluminium paint, as in real aluminium content within the liquid, presumably very fine powder to be held in solution.
Zinc would have heat problems and gives off fumes when over temp. Always amuses me when they "upcycle" something galvanised on these trendy programs, making a bbq out of something heavily zinc coated. Not particularly good to be breathing that stuff while cooking your food :-[
My grandad had pots of real aluminium paint, and painted anything with it, Nan was lucky to escape the silvery onslaught :D

So are you saying the rear of the silencer was painted silver Nigel or just the areas like the mounting studs or drain holes? I did have a tin of 'Galvofroid' (or similar name) an old school electrician gave me that he used to use on rethreaded gas pipes.
-
I don’t know for certain Ash, but all the items I've seen appear to be consistent in this respect.
It seems to be used not as replacement in total but as ad-hoc coverage when chroming hasn't fully been brought to perfect coverage and mostly on less seen parts. Almost like a production quality control "catch all finish" to avoid scrapping/ rechrome operation.
Often seen on underside of items like rear brake pedal on the foot plate pressing, with the virtual cavity that produces.
-
Galvafroid is great stuff and is effectively cold galvanising to bare steel. Have some parts painted years ago and still rust free....Still have a few tins ;)
-
Never considered alloy paint, yeah that would make sense. I do know it rubbed off quite easily, underneath was a dull silver finish, maybe a really thin nickel plate. The 2 sides were like chalk and cheese, the inside was really dull, the outside was really bright decorative chrome as it was called. The inside rusted far easier than the outside but then again most people polished the outside, whereas the inside was normally left alone and of course was more subject to stone strikes etc.
I have 2 original 323 exhaust upstairs, however I painted both of them with zinc paint on the inside in order to try and avoid the rusting problem. It stayed on really well and both exhausts look really well, keep thinking I'll sell them but then I think I may use them at some point.
This is one, you can see the zinc paint around the balance tube.
