Title: Camshaft Cover fastners question?
Post by: McCabe-Thiele (Ted) on September 25, 2023, 08:47:38 PM
When I came to re-fitting my camcase cover the left side hex socket headed screws do not clear he valve cover caps properly.  I have used hex head SS bolts for the remainder without issue.

Do you have to fit JIS headed screws for the front four fastenings.

Mine foul the caps as they are too tall.

Could it be that my valve cap covers are too wide- aftermarket ones?

I had this problem and had to use button head allen screws in the end.

My socket head bolts foul the tappet caps too, they were on the bike when I got it so will probably replace them with button heads.

So where can I get them from Ken are they a genuine Honda part with an associated part number? They are 20 mm long.

Update: Seen some on e- bay £5.00 each plus delivery that's daft money.

They are less than £1.50 inc VAT each from any Honda dealer. Or available online. £1.38 each at Fowlers for instance.

With these bolts Ted all you need to remember is to substitute the length inside the part number.

For instance, the part number for a 35mm bolt of the same type is 96000-06035-00. The 96000 denotes the type of bolt, in this case a flanged 8mm headed bolt. The next 2 numbers are the diameter of the bolt, in this case 6mm, if it was 8mm it would be 08.

Then just change the next 3 numbers to the length you want, so you want 20mm so just search for 96000-06020-00. The next 2 numbers aren't really needed, they denote the finish of the bolt, in this case BZP.

If you fancy changing others you can actually do the entire casing set. If you want to check to see if Honda ever did a particular size just change the numbers to the length you want and search. They did really long ones, over 105mm for instance.

Member on here changed his entire casing screws to these on his 550 after finding the same problem as you. They look really well fitted, far better than crosshead JIS screws for instance.

Forgot to add the rear bolts on the camcover are 25mm not 20mm, bear that in mind. I think Honda got the parts book diagram wrong, they show the 20mm screws as No.26 and fitted to the right hand side when it should show them fitted to all the front bolt holes, there are 4 in total. The rear outer holes are No.27 in the parts book and are fitted to the rear outer holes and the outer holes on the breather cover, again 4 in total. You can also replace the other bolts are the same time so they look uniform, you'll need 5 x 40mm, 1 x 50mm and 4 x 65mm. If you want you can also change the 2 under the camshaft end caps, but as you can't see them when fitted that's up to you. Those are 2 x 45mm bolts.

Personally I think they look better that way, instead of a mix of 10mm headed plain bolts and JIS screws you get a complete set of flanged bolts, which don't scratch the new paintwork as bad, and they are all the same. Plus unlike socket bolts and JIS screws they don't hold water inside the head and rust away. The original bolts have a slight dome on the head which allows water to just drain off them, for some reason the pics I can see of the now they look a bit flat headed.

No problem Ted.. Still working on your arb bracket BTW, making the locking screw for the bar today. Bracket is finished and looks nice.

Another advantage of using the 8mm headed bolts is that you an torque them down, you can do it with JIS screws but it's fiddly and nowhere near as good. Plus, when removing them you get far better purchase and drive.

My 8 mm headed M6 x 20 bolts arrived today in Honda sealed packaging from Fowlers- fitted a treat -  the part number appears to have been changed slightly to 96001-0602000 nice & shiney. 8) 8) 8)

I think I'm going to order some too Ted, all my top crankcase bolts have rusted heads too.

Yeah I did notice the superceded number Ted, thought it best to keep quoting the old one in case the new ones were ever so slightly different.

Do the new ones have flat tops or round tops on the bolt head? Curious.

You going to replace the rest now to match? Not that expensive to do and the look is well worth it believe me.

Nah the rest are SS hex headed bolts I have to draw a line on costs in the shifting sands that was my budget. 🤫

New bolts are smooth top slightly convex so no water traps.👍👍👍

Yeah, really slight dome on the top, completely smooth so dirt finds it hard to grip. Sounds like the same bolts. Odd as the pics on CMS show them as flat topped.

I gather that's not them.

Mine are much shinier than your cms pic plus they have a slightly raised dome.🌟🌟🌟

Been a useful thread this. The parts list diagram is hard to untangle but j think I will go full dome hex head at the top end. What’s the best option for the clutch and other cover bolts? Are you going ss cap head here Ted ? That is the way I’m thinking but I’m also tempted by the cms full engine set of cross heads…

I'm SS on my cam covers aside from the front four that are the 8mm headed ones. I am not keen on cross heads as not as easy to Torque up. As all my engine casing bolts were the dreaded Allen Key headed type in  SS I kept them aside from the top engine casing ones that hold water. Used std hex head in SS.
