Title: Chainguard Repair
Post by: McCabe-Thiele (Ted) on November 28, 2023, 04:54:49 PM
Not sure if it will work long term but used some Epoxy Resin repair solution to fix a broken section.  I added some micronised graphite to make it black.
I have some proper paint for flexible plastics that I will paint it with eventually.
Cleaned/roughed up the broken area & drilled it for a couple of strengthening pegs plus some saw cuts to help the bonding.

Interesting to see how you've done it there Ted.

Also made me think, it's funny how looking at something causes your mind to dig up something related but not commonly associated with motorcycle etc

Often ski base repairs are carried out by melting new plastic into damaged areas, referenced as "P-Tex" usually and available for hot gun applications https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/115878830369 and looking remarkably close in material type to flexible bike plastics.

Could be of use in this case, very routine in maintaining ski or snowboard to correct damage on bases.

I tried the JB weld version first but it would not set - managed a refund via ebay I suspect it was out of date so used UniBond version that is for harder materials.

Quite a few U tube videos of melting black cable ties as a repair - I do not have a suitable heat gun.

I wonder if they are the size for a glue gun and would they work!? I tend to use tie wraps as the filler with a soldering iron....

Did my first cover coat with the Rust-Oleum paint for plastics - decided against trying to get the top dent out - its a 50 year old bike at the end of the day.
A bit cold in my garage so I will leave the final top coat until spring after some flatting with 1200 grit.

That looks good Ted👍 I’m in the same dilemma with it being too cold to paint my headlight shell in this freezing weather.

Its my heated Garage Annexe (originally a fish house) it's my old Police Whistle in the background - no longer issued but back in 1971 our old VHF Radios had so many black spots that we relied on Phone Boxes to make hourly "Points" you would wait outside a phone box at a set time waiting for a call. Whistles were more for City Policing to try to get back up during an arrest.

The small sticker is a spare - the Austrian Flag that I display on the boot of my car - I was born in Klagenfurt in 1948 coming to the UK when I was five. I'm now a British Subject applying for Naturalisation when I was 12/13 yrs old. I have family who still live in Klagenfurt - I see myself as Austrian probably because my late mother managed to get us out of post war Austria as a single Mum when it was not fashionable. Sadly troubled by the war losing all three of her brothers who were conscripted into the German Army - her youngest died on his first day of action on the Russian Front. Only one has a proper grave that is in Crete - Malema.
