Title: Relocating or alternative to ignition switch
Post by: DomP on May 12, 2024, 03:27:15 PM
Do any of you electrical guys know a good solution for my cafe racer build?  I'm looking to either relocate the ignition or change it to  keyless to make room for my centrally mounted gauge, any thoughts appreciated!

I've got keyless fitted to Millie, my 550 Mongrel. Graham made up the wiring and fitted a hidden master isolater switch and one of the handlebar switch gear slide switches as another isolater and the original start button starts the bike.

That sounds the answer Julie, do you have any idea how he did it?

I know the very basics of how he did it but I'll ask Graham for more info later. Also, PM me over your email address and I'll send you some photos.

Chatting with Roo earlier when he suggested I used the old K style frame mounted ignition, I could make up a bracket if I can't find an original but there is a wiring difference - 5 wires on my F as opposed to 4 on a K switch.  Is there a wiring solution?

Looking at the wiring diagrams I seems the 4 wire switch has two browns linked into one, I wonder if its as simple as doing that?

Yeah Motogadget was just a step toofar financially for me, I keep thinking 'cheap build remember, cheap build'  🤣

I'm sure an electrical genius will answer my query

More than likely, cue Bryan, Ash, Ken; Oo, sorry

Isn’t there a link on the classic octane site for a slot into the loom 4 way key barrel, I’m sure there is but you may need to list the videos and go to the links on each one to see but I’m sure there’s a link, maybe a hamazon link.

What actual model is it and where is the ignition switch now?

Hi Bryan, it's my cb550f1 with the hugely long centrally mounted ignition barrel which I'd like to move somewhere more discrete

If the only difference is the extra brown wire then you should be able to use the earlier 4 wire switch but good luck finding an original Honda bracket and then you would need to weld a bracket for it to bolt to onto the frame.
The us boys used to move the early switch to between the clocks with a bracket that i may have one of somewhere but finding it is a problem.
I am just back from my sisters funeral, give me some time and i will check out the wiring diagrams for you

Sorry to hear about your sister Bryan.

I may make up a bracket and utilise the horn fixing points

I know where there might be some brackets but they’re in the US.

Do you want me to ask my pal over there Dom? It’s a bit of a long shot but I know they’re there……

Don't worry Roo, I'll cobble something up on the cheap if I can, failing that I'll take you up on your kind offer mate

This is the 550F wiring diagram, the two browns connect pretty much immediately in the loom anyway so surely eliminating one or rejoining them will make no difference on a 4 wire switch?  Isn't it just the park position

Got it, the only reason for the extra brown is the fact the steering lock is on the ignition switch so you need to feed the sidelights from there, just joining both to the one brown on the 4 wire will be fine as it does not have a steering lock built in.
I would suggest a padded P clamp on the frame tube holding the bracket the switch fits in.

Perfect Bryan, could I just eliminate the spliced in brown then?
