Title: Insurance recommendatioons
Post by: Laverdaroo on June 04, 2024, 09:42:32 PM
Hi all,
'The Long Haired General' is looking for insurance on 'Chewy' her 400 but having not insured anything this old or modified for a very long time I wondered if any of you on here have  had any good bad, cheap or expensive scenarios when insuring your own bikes recently (12months) and possibly suggest any good companies to approach?

Any help greatly received and with any luck, should have her scootching around the lanes in no time. ;D

Cheers in advance

Swinton. I've just renewed 2 of my old Hondas and they work out about £60 each, fully comp. I don't have cover for any frills though, no helmet / leather cover, or key cover etc. Graham had 2 up for renewal last week, his were only £50 each.

I was with swinton but they didnt like the bike being in restoration so went to one call, insurance was cheap but there was a "broker fee" that bumped it a bit.
First choice would be to ask whoever you are with to me sometimes loyalty works

Thought that yesterday Bryan, called them, left on hold for 45mins and totally hacked off with the customer portal so I gave tyem a crapm review. They emailed me tonight and arranged to call me in the morning.

That said, tried Swinton earlier and so far they are £324.00 cheaper than rhe nearest quote!
fully comp with no excess and no NCD- £100.36!

Adrian flux couldnt even foind the bike on the data base and the big companies are Really expensive. I cant put it on my insurance as the bikes in her name as only the second owner and Im not transfering the docs over, its  not worth it.

I'm with Peter James - my 400 & 500 fully comprehensive for £163.57, my previous NCB had lapsed, I'm quite happy with the price, my age will count against me at 76, assured value on the 400, when the 500 is finished I will up the value cover.

We have our old Merc insured as a classic with rhsspecialistinsurance.co.uk better cover & cheaper than when we were with Direct Line as well as being an agreed value policy. They do motorcycles as well presumably with restricted mileage.

I'm with Peter James, I get the VMCC member discount, ten bikes, unlimited mileage, from a 1939 Triumph to my modern bike, an '87 VFR750, £299.

Hi Roo & LHG ,

Nice one on the subject of insurance companies I have copied the companies down and will have a phone round when its next due in March, But will phone up in late Feb 21 days before its due ) as I was told many years ago the less risk they have on the books the better the quote will be..... So if you do your insurance in winter its cheaper than renewing in the summer 🤗

Have a safe trip out tomorrow and enjoy the ride 😎

Regards
🐕 😎

A thing came up today is compare quotes 23 days before yours runs out as you are considered a lower risk if you renew before you have to

I have heard that if your renewal is in the last few days of the month then you often get a better quote if the insurer has a an even demographic spread of risk that month.

I think the term Screenscrapers was used for this search process, less so theses days with the giants like Go Compare & Compare the Meercat!

I've just bought a s/h Royal Enfield Interceptor (not a Honda but it is a sohc  ;)). Maybe I should have checked the insurance aspect before I bought it but I didn't because I thought I could just add it to my existing Peter James policy as lets face it, its A2 compliant and it won't rip my arms out of my sockets when I accelerate.............and that's when the trouble started!

Peter James were really, really helpful when I called them but said they couldn't insure it as it was too modern for them (a bike has to be 20+ years old for the policy I have with them so I'm lucky the mighty VFR is now 25 years old even if it is still a rocketship!).
I went on the MCN GoCompare site in the end. The cheapest was Hastings Direct but they had a big excess. I settled on Swinton Insurance and paid £184 for fully comp (£30 of that was a new business tax, in other words, a stealth tax!).

What really p****d me off though was although I have held motorcycle insurance since I was 17 and only had one accident in 2001 (not my fault) apparently insuring motorcycles on classic policies only gives you 'No Claims', it does not give you any 'No Claims Discount', a play on wording that could cost you £000's if you insure a modern bike!

Fair play though to Swinton, the third agent I spoke to (the previous two agents couldn't answer my questions) gave me the maximum 9 years NCB on the policy as I hadn't had any accidents since 2001 and despite only having the 'No Claims' criteria from PJ. Without the NCB discount the policy would have cost £340  :o.

It pays to shop around and ask questions.

New business tax? WTF??

Rae never got charged any of that Dave, that sounds a bit of a ‘made up tax’ tbh, I’ve never heard of it before, I’d be questioning that……..

Ive heard of IPT its about 12% on premiums I think.

Might be that Brokers have additional charges to pay for new business to an underwriter so they have to show any comission fees ?

You are correct Ted. Now it's nearly nearly finished and therefore big enough to be stolen I added Ratty to my existing classic insurance policy with PJ. It cost £10 but I had to pay an additional £20 admin fee!
They get you every way!

Roo, if you weren't aware, Adrian Flux & BikeSure are the same guys and have been competitive for me (half of the fleet) The rest I put on with OneCall. Out of all the companies I have called recently, Flux was the easiest to talk to and deal with. I have had classic car with RH Insurance for years but they are now part of Howden and not worth dealing with. Be interesting to see what my quotes come in like for the F800....

It's just a government tax,
