This morning, I found brake fluid dripping off the end of my brake lever. Does anyone know if the master cylinder can be repaired and are the seals available or am I better off getting a replacement unit?
-
Personally I have replaced the master cylinders on my 400 & 500 with the DS one. I found they have much less free play in them than than my originals. Not for the purists in terms of originality.
Fitting new seals is an option if the cylinder bores are in good condition. I would strip the cylinder down first to avoid wasting money on a kit that might not fix the weep. Obviously you need to be sure it's the original cylinder as well.

That's really good advice, thank you. It is the original master cylinder but I'm not fussy about that type of thing. I guess if I buy a new one I can repair the other at my leisure. Sounds like the DS ones are good then.

Yes, I also switched to a DS master cylinder after my overhauled Honda original leaked, and it's a lot better.
Cheers

looks good, different colour, mine is silver grey, but definitely going to order one, thanks all for the recommendation.

I have just bought a DS one for my bike as the old one was leaking and generally not great. I have not fitted the DS one yet as it is part of a bigger restro project, it does look good and the quality seems very good. It should also help improve braking. I was going to refurb the old ms, and even bought the refurb kit, but like yours mine was also a worn silver grey colour, so I just thought the DS one will save me the refurb and painting work. I will keep my original so I have it for the bike if I want to go back to standard.

1 it should be anodised black
2 the pattern one is not much dearer than a Honda seal kit
3 they can be a swine to strip

thanks all, DS master cylinder in the post.

This is the the repro I bought in March for € 55,-, a few euro's more than a rebuild set costs. https://www.fourdeelshop.nl/product/6269547/hoofdremcylinder-enkele-schijf-aftermarket CMSNL has them. Works excellent. BTW, you can replace that nasty black cap by the cap of your original MC.

Probably still need to bleed the master at the outlet mate

Master cylinder arrived today and during lunchtime, fitted and bled. Just took for a quick blast and very surprised how much better than the original this is, the brakes have more feel and bite, very impressive. Highly recommended, Dave Silver aftermarket, cheap and very effective.
