Title: Brake cam
Post by: TezzerTel on October 09, 2024, 04:05:39 PM
I found this u shaped spacer/packer around my brake cam when I stripped the drum. I'm guessing this isn't standard Honda? Question is did the PO run out of adjustment so put this in instead of buying new shoes or something else?

I stripped my 550 rear brake recently and there was just the cam; no 'shim'. I think this is probably a bodge as you say; see what the more knowledgable on the forum think though.

Definately a bodge to get more out of the shoes! Problem with that is because it only pivots and expands at one end there would be less shoe in contact with the drum. When they are worn to the indicator on the outer case they are needing replaced.

Interesting, maybe the drum has been skimmed, and this is a way of adjusting the shoes

I guess I need to measure the inside diameter of the drum. My Haynes manual says 181mm ?

Yup a bodge to use up the lining, other way is to move the arm on the spline, max diameter is cast inside the drum 181 sounds about right
