On the centre stand should the pin be fixed in the clamps that are on the frame and rotate within the stand or should the pin be fixed in the stand and rotate in the clamps on the frame?
-
Fixed in the clamps but frequently siezed into the stand and needs destroying to get out
-
Yes mine was quite 'FIXED' !! in the centre stand and was quite a ordeal getting it out. I've got a aftermarket pin but it's a little tight in my centre stand. I did mark the bore a little when I removed the old one. I'll give it a polish so ot rotates freely

While you're there I think it's a good idea to fit a grease nipple on the middle of centre stand tube.
I had to cut a slot with a hacksaw blade inserted through the seized pin to get it out of my stand which left a shallow slot cut inside the stand bore.
That seems to help grease spread the full width of the stand.
Should never seize up again.
Have fun

Talking about center stands, I have asked here before what could have caused the metal fatigue of my main stand and maybe, maybe I have found the answer. As on my bike the crankcase breather tube has always been routed to end on the LH side, I don't rule out acid fumes may have weakened the metal. In this video, Gruzzel* demonstrates how to install the carbs again. To my surprise he routes the breather tube to the RH side. There is even - surprise, surpise - a guide down there.

*BTW, there are no better video's than Gruzzel's on dissasembly and assembly of the CB500 carbs. Perfect to watch on a rainy day. It's almost a Zen experience. Highly recommended.

Do you have a link to Gruzzel's please,is it in English or German ?
-
It's in German. You can opt for subtitles in English but the translation is not very good. The images speak for themself though. Disassembly starts here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnN40yp8Jfg and reassembly starts here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXD7F4q72M4
For years I have hesitated to even mention the serie; in my opinion such a full job is never ever needed.

Thanks, my German is very basic, I can just about order another beer!
As you do when on U-tube I found this - a bit OTT but interesting to see the effort someone has gone to to prove a point.
My old W124 if it was a slighly over the full mark when hot would produce a load of smoke at around 5K rpm, folk I had overtaken would think it had blown up!
