Title: CB 400/4 1975
Post by: Multiman on December 30, 2024, 12:18:58 PM
Hi, my rear mudguard has developed two cracks, one on either side, just behind its rear frame mounting points.
The rear of the mudguard is going to come off soon so I need to replace it.
Anyone got a serviceable one they are willing to part with? Doesn't have to be mint.
Any other helpful suggestions gratefully received.

Happy New Year folks!
Cheers

Tim

If the mudguard is original I would do my best to repair it unless it is so full of rust it is beyond repair.
The two cracks can be welded or if they are bad cracks they can be plated below the cracks and the crack itself welded or brazed. The rear (and front) mudguards on Ratty had been drilled to accept pike nuts and a tombstone rear light. I had the chrome plate removed and the mudguards plated and the holes filled with braze. I cleaned them up and had them chrome plated.

New ones aren't cheap but neither is re-chroming.

The last pattern rear mudguard I bought was an absolute pig to fit because it was out of alignment.
This is the reason I would try to save an original as I did with Ratty. The quality of the steel with an original part is thicker and the mounting holes are in the correct place!

At least with a UK seller it's easier to return it for a refund.

Thanks for the input guys. Another forumite has been in touch and is going to send me some pictures of a couple of original mudguards he has. Hopefully we can do a deal. I will keep my split mudguard and renovate when I have the time and funds. Thats the plan today anyway!
