Title: Value of CB500K1 NOS Tank and Nice Original Paint Side Panels Candy Custom Gold?
Post by: AshimotoK0 on September 04, 2025, 12:37:39 PM
I have decided to move my 1st week production CB500K0 onto my young ex-colleague and good friend from near me on here ...  Ben Powell. He made an absolutely stunning job of his CB350K3 US import, rides it as it should be used, and he's only 30 so will finish the 500K0 and ride it too.

I had it painted in the original Candy Jade (Jet  ;D) green by Menno some years back and he made a superb job, as always.

I also have a NOS (looks perfect) Candy Custom Gold  fuel tank and original paint, used K1 side panels. The panels were re-clear coated and look absolutely lovely but not 100% perfect. I gave Ben the option of Jade Green or non-standard K1 custom Gold (K0 was Starlight Gold) and he chose green...which I was pretty pleased about. If anyone queries that new  tanks did not come from Honda with the fuel cap and latch fitted ...I have to tell you categorically that you are wrong  ;)  .... Pity they never came with the chrome trim though  :(

So I am asking the 500 afficionados on here what a gold set like this should be realistically sold for,  given that Menno sells a repainted set for around 1500 Euros without the cap & latch.

Hi Ash,
Although I'm not in need of a 500 tank and panels - I would only end up looking for a bike to go with them, I agree with your assertion that Honda tanks came with cap and latch!  Many years ago our local Honda dealers, Bill Head in Preston (when we lived in Lancashire - sorry Roo, I'm cured now!) used to have a classic bike show each year and Bill would sell off a lot of NOS and shop soiled stuff.  I bought a brand new Varnish blue 400/4 tank which had a really tiny scratch on the side down near the seam, through to the primer, so couldn't be sold as new.  I paid £75 for it and found a Yamaha colour and touched in the scratch which became virtually invisible.  It had the cap and latch fitted.

My gold set cost about £850 in 2019 for that standard for parts and spray. But six years on the market is subdued so finding a buyer may be more difficult.

With respect, there's a vast difference between a used repainted tank and a NOS carefully stored one. With a NOS one you know you can fill it with fuel and it aint going to develop a leak six months down the line. How old NOS paint copes with modern fuel I don't know and not going to test it out  :D

My take on the bike market is yea it's on its ar$e. This is why I am parting  out my CB72 project and a couple of others  and I can state this as a fact that spares in nice condition prices are not on their ar$e ....  far from it. I stand to make double what I would have done if I have assembled it and sold it. Sad fact but it's reality I am afraid. I suppose my nice parts will really benefit somebody else's project. I had a guy two weeks ago make a 360 mile round trip to pick up a NOS speedo as he didn't trust the post/couriers.

As with everything the `market price` is only valid if you can get the parts, if not then its whatever people will pay for them as `original nos` items, they look awsome. if I were doing a concour project, they would be on my list, unfortunatly my project is not so and trying to complete on a budget.
good luck, they are a thing of beauty :-)

If I was doing a 500K1 rebuild Ash I'd have them off you like a shot and I'd pay what ever the market price was and likely a bit more as I'd know they have come from somebody who has looked after them properly and they haven't been sitting in a damp shed.
Alas a 500 rebuild isn't on my radar (I don't even have a 500 project lurking in the garage/shed or neighbours garage). The next one on the bench will be the NC30 probably followed by a CB250RSA for when I become too weak to hold up the VFR 😉.
Good luck with the sale and I think you will no doubt get a few bites as we approach winter and the restoration season begins in earnest 👍

Sorry Ash, no idea of the value but they look absolutely stunning and good luck with finding an owner.  I would buy them but within six months they would be in a terrible state I am sure, not that good at keeping things shiny.

Many years ago, in the eighties, I bought a new old stock cb350k tank from Dave Silvers' stand at the NEC, to replace the original one I had which was leaking.  Sadly, it just looked wrong on the bike, too clean and shiny.  Sacrilege I know, but I ended up painting it black with a spray can so it blended in better with my bike.  I would never do that again and feel rather regretful.  I should have kept it and sold it now, would be worth quite a lot.

I’d say about 1300 Ash. Menno charges more but then again he has to source a tank etc, prep and paint it and make a profit, in fact I’d say his paintwork is superior to the Honda one.

I may be interested, shame it’s not the green set, I’d have bought that.

Hi Ash, not much sale to the Orkney guys but can I just say these look absolutely great and a lovely colour too. Good luck with the sale in my opinion they are worth every penny of whatever someone is willing to pay!😳😜

Mmm ...not strictly correct Johnny  :D  as a nice chap  is coming from Orkney to buy my NOS CD125 sloper exhausts & CD175A sloper chainguard set in a couple of weeks. Thanks Orcadian for setting it up for me with your friend. He's got 3 x CBX1000's ...geez !

I think that you are maybe looking for someone who doesn't want to put fuel into it. Just a show bike in the living room which would be a shame.

Hi Ash
I am looking for a tank for my KO resto but unfortunately would need to re- spray in black. Have you decided on an asking price yet? Would you be willing to split and sell tank only?

Hi I listed them in the sales section a few days ago ...but it would be criminal to re-spray such a lovely tank and I don't really want to separate from the side panels. I reckon someone on here is bound to have a used tank suitable for a repeat of you ask in the Desperately Seeking section on here.
