This is not a particular nice time of year when it is time to winterise these lovely machines. (Roll on new year, 🤭) Put the 750 and the 550K1 into hybernation yesterday. Still have the 550k3 and the pan to run if a nice day should come, although the 550k3 will end up winterised too as soon as the road salt appears. I have drained carbs and tank and swilled a couple of pints of diesel in each tank to help keep rust at bay. Covered them up and placed a small tubular heater under each cover. (probably OTT)
They are also in a fully insulated shed. I will probably see them around March 26 sometime. Haven’t done much riding this year but more than others so not complaining, been a beautiful summer so wasn’t the usual lack of descent weather to blame. Hope everyone keeps well over the winter and we are all able to enjoy another lovely summer and happy tinkering over the winter.

It's a beautiful day here on the banks of the River Tay. Tempted to get out for a lovely autumn ride myself. Make the most of it while you can Johnny! 😎

Having had problems recommissioning my bike following winter resting in previous years, I have decided to keep riding mine through the winter this year as I did last year. I have fond memories of riding last winter and when I very occasionally saw another bike out and about, there was a great sense of camaraderie. My bike doesn't have many shiny bits to worry about and the salt doesn't seem to bother it. I put grease on the mudguards as they are getting more expensive to replace or harder to find. I also squirt a bit of oil where the downpipes meet and knock off the worst pieces of mud which can collect in places.

I used white spirit with a dash of oil to flush out the fuel system and leave the carbs full of it over winter. Just hate the stink of diesel, spent a lot of time stinking of the stuff in my youth after topping up tractors from jerri cans in the middle of fields.
Also remove the air filter and blow out any water that might be in the air box drain tube, on mine the tube has a cap with a split that you are supposed to squeeze to drain it occasionally.

Don’t forget to change the engine oil and filter Johnny. Any contamination in the old oil can eat away at the shell bearings which can cause problems later in its life. A short run after changing the oil will get it around the engine and help to avoid this problem. I’ve had to sorn my bike as my present health means I can’t ride till at least next March. I plan to take it for an MOT on April 1st and tax it the same day so I’m ready for the summer. All things being well I may finally get some riding done next year.

Good call on the oil and filter change Ken, haven’t done the oil change on these this time, did them before last lay up and they have only done 400 miles between them. Hopefully steady build up of strength over the winter Ken and you will be fighting fit comes spring.

I've had enough of diesel in my tank to last a lifetime ::) , I'd rather put a tiger in it. ;D I can't lay my bike up indoors because I don't have a garage, so some short rides if only around the compound most days of the week and staying out of the wet are the only ways forward for me. But lots of ACF-50 will be used etc.

I seem to be draining out largely unused oil the last few years, I just cant find the time to use my bikes. I wonder what my oil change routine should be on so few miles.
