I was charged £87.84 (inc VAT) for 6.1 Litres of oil when I had my Volvo Serviced, on top of that I was charged a disposal levy for the waste oil.
I have a bottle of Top up oil in Volvo packaging that states its Castrol Edge Pro 0W-20 meets specification VCC-RBSO-2AE.
It must be a good little earner for Castrol who sell Castrol Edge Pro 0W-20 with a variety of slightly different specifications for Volvo, Ford, Jaguar Land Rover, Vauxhall, each presumably with a specific additive for hybrid, turbo variants etc.
Is it likely at the Castrol Refinery make so many variations of Edge Pro 0W-20 oil?
Is it badge (ok bottle) engineering to fleece customers, the cynic in me thinks it's probably all the same oil until it's in the bottling plant, an appropriate label is then affixed at the end of the line?

My guess is its all the same oil and its tested to all the specs and passes but they only write the individual one on the conforming bottle/lable.
I am still changing my own and buy mannol from ebay

Don't worry Ted, the price of your oil (and road fuel/heating oil) will soon come down now that the Very Reverend Donald has sorted the mess out.
As you say - badge (bottle)engineering!

Forgot to add :
BP Chemicals in Saltend Hull (where my then girlfriend worked in the 70's) used to buy 5 gallon 'Robbican' drums of 20/50 Orobis oil, which was the same stuff that was branded as 'BP Visco Static' but the Orobis was a fraction of the 'Genuine' stuff.

There's a big mark up on that Ted. I serviced my Volvo myself with the same oil from Halfords and it was half the price!

Last time I checked Halfords were not selling the manufacturers recommended grade if Castrol Edge, it appears that they do a special version for turbocharged engines.
As mine is under an extended warranty I have to stick with the local main dealer for another 12 months. Not sure if it will invalidate the hybrid battery warranty if I go outside the dealer network.

I also have an extended warranty on my Ford Kuga hybrid and so use the local main dealer but my understanding is that you can use a local independent dealer as long as they are VAT registered and they use genuine parts. When I last got a quote the price for the independent dealer using genuine parts was almost identical to Fords prices.

Make sure that any invoices from an independent garage quote the Registration and Vin number of the vehicle.

Please don't confuse recommended oil with manufacturers approved oil.
You must always use the latter if your vehicle is under warranty.
