Title: Just written off my bike in a nasty accident
Post by: UK Pete on January 26, 2012, 09:07:44 PM
Travelling up a main road in orpington kent to see my mum when a car pulled out smack bang in front of me, impact speed was quite a lot, anyway i went straight over the bars landed real heavy on my wright side on the roof, went along with the car a bit, then got dumped on the middle of the road again on my RHS, ambulance took nearly an hour to reach me, then gave me lots of air/gas and morphine, the bike is totalled, frame, forks, wheel, clocks, mudguard, engine cases, tank levers, switch gear, Etc all ruined
i have clean snapped my humerus bone, so my arm was flapping in all directions, i am bruised and dented up a bit but glad to be alive and out of hospital , so it looks like few months of misery and no earings as i work for myself, and also wont be on a bike for a good while, all the time off i will have and yet i cant get on with anything, none of my restorations,i  cant even wipe my a-se

Seriously bad news :( Look on the bright side (bit difficult right now I know) your still with us, and you'll be able to ride again, too many don't get that kind of escape. I hope plod are nicking the car driver good and proper, and hopefully he's insured, if he is, get one of those ambulance chasing lawyers on the case straight away, pain, suffering, loss of earnings etc ;) Which bike was it?

just sitting at home now thinking WTF just happened, i am going to have to go for loss of earnings and money for bike at minimum,
the bike was my favourite bike my klr 600,  but out of all my bikes it is probably worth the least,

If he wasn't insured get a solicitor to check out the "Motor Insurance Bureau"It's a scheme all insurance companies pay into and it will pay out for your personal injuries mate.

I was victim of a hit and run years ago and they paid out for my broken ankle.

Hope you are well enough to earn soon and enough to ride for the summer

Bad news man :(    not a good start to the year, get well soon.

And whatever they offer you, REFUSE IT and hold out for more!

Bad news man :(    not a good start to the year, get well soon.
And whatever they offer you, REFUSE IT and hold out for more!
Very sorry to hear about your collision with a careless driver. (no such thing as an accident).
My advice based on my experience involving myself and others I represented over 25 years is

A - Contact a motorcycle experienced solicitor without delay,
B - Don't use a No win - No fee outfit - it will cost you in the long run.
C - This is the most important - Keep a written, with proof record of every item of expense even including telephone calls, bus fares, in fact every aspect of expense you would not have incurred without the event happening.
D - As stated above, the first offer which might be tempting during a term of loss of earnings will be the very lowest and always not worth accepting. An old lady relative I advised had a previous offer dramatically improved prior to entering the court on the day of the hearing.

Best wishes for a full recovery and a successful conclusion.

I work in the personal injury industry and I couldn't agree more with A and C. I'd recommend http://www.bankstone.co.uk/ (they are not my employer, I'm not touting for work here, but I do know their MD) or alternatively http://www.bldgroup.co.uk
B isn't really accurate, the insurers pay the fee of any solicitor there is no reason to pay them extra yourself.

To elucidate :-
It's usual to have to take out an insurance policy and pay a premium first in case of the case failing.
My experience also (in industrial cases) is that pressure is sometimes applied to settle early for the 'ambulance chaser' to receive their expenses quickly, the injured party easily becomes the filling in the sandwich.
But hey - who's arguing ? :)

Sorry to see your bad news Pete, and hope they've got your bones back in the right place for you.

As the others have already said although it's serious at least it's not more severe!

I hope your recovery goes well and gets you fully back to normal.

At least it wasn't the F2 after all that hard work.

Sorry to hear about your accident but glad to hear that, although still really nasty, at least it wasn't worse.  Best wishes for your recovery.

Jesus Pete - you don't do things by halves, do you?

Really sorry to hear about your off, but it's good to hear you're OK (in a manner of speaking).  That's a nasty looking break you've got yourself, although it looks clean enough from the x-ray so with any luck you'll get a good fix.  Don't even want to think what the bike looks like . . .

Whilst not in your league, I was out of action for weeks before Christmas when I did something really unpleasant to my back (I'm still waiting an MRI to find out where my sciatic nerve is trapped) - but it was bad enough that I couldn't do some of the stuff you're struggling with.  I can't say I know exactly how you feel, but I've got a pretty good idea.

Best wishes chap.  Keep us updated with your progress.

How are you getting on Pete?

Are the bones setting OK?

Hi Nigel thanks for asking, I have a new arm brace fitted now so this is how my arm will stay for the next few months, i have xrays every two weeks from now to moniter how quickly it repairs, the doctor magnified the last xray and showed me the callus bone repair forming which he thinks is ok, and so i might not need an operation.
below are some of the pictures of brace and xrays,  the repair is not really visable in this as alot of detail is lost because it is my camera phone picture of his screen
please excuse the picture of my man titty, i am getting fatter as i am eating lots of protien to aid healing ( thats my excuse anyway)

That sounds positive at least, and good if you can get away without an op.

A friend of mine stuffed his leg a few years ago in a bike crash and it was quite severely damaged (this isn't meant to be scary) but what impressed me was the skill and attention he got from the NHS. There are many gripes about the NHS but I was amazed at how they fixed what was a complex injury and just kept going at it to sort it out.

The x-rays are quite cool! you'll have to get that rabbit going on the restos now.
