Post by: MikeM on January 30, 2014, 10:54:34 AM
going to post up some photos of the  tank, very original tank but sat untouched for at least 2o years if not more

all there ,would like to keep original paint , has a few hairline cracks but overall not bad looking

So petrol inside what problems am i likely to come up against and cures

ie tank and petrol tap ?

It is good to find out that you have petrol still inside the tank. It stops the rust build up. When you are ready to fit the tank, empty it out and remove the fuel tap. The tap will only need some WD40 and the o'rings replaced, Hopefully. Check what condition the petrol is in, look for any bits of rust.
If the tank shows signs of surface rust. This can be cleaned very easy.

Not a bad tank, will need a respray and you have a very good firm in your area. What does the inside look like ????.

its good to have the fuel flap lock, even though any key fits they are often missing.

It's not a lock as such. Anything that fits the slot and turns will open it.

... and the key from my 500/4 (or any key actually) would open the drivers door of my first Ford Escort...

I once got in what I thought was my nova and wondered why the seat was in an odd position and something was hanging from the rear view mirror - my car was 3 or 4 spaces further down the row.

so tank, any cheap n cheerful remedies for cleaning inside, from what I see just very mild surface rust, no holes found

The cheapest way is find a nice gravel drive way at 3am, and take a couple of kilo. Make sure you have the tap removed and cap that off. Put the gravel in the tank and wrap it in a blanket. Next line your tumble dryer with another blanket and put the tank in. Pack the dryer out with more blankets, so that the tank can't move and switch it on for 10 to 15 minutes.
Once the gravel has gone its job. Empty out and flush with water.  It doesn't get any cheaper than that.

I filled mine with water and soap powder. Can't remember if it was Surf or Daz though. :) Works on light rusting. Lots of powder.

giving it a wash then as above

is there no filter in these bikes ?

undone the petrol tap and nothing in it?

looks like I need a new seal round the tap but was expecting some sort of gauze?

I'd expect to see this on the tap.

Isn't yours a gauze?

No gauze on a single out let tap.

I beg to differ. Mine definately does.
The picture above and below is what is on mine. It's not just a tube.

Gauze on the k3 tank I recently failed to sell on ebay too, I could check - I suspect the other k3 tank in the shed also sports a gauze, though it is an age since I looked.

When I took the tap off my 400F tank I found the gauze was splitting along the "seam". May be in this case it's become detached altogether.

could still be stuck in the tank?
Title: Re: 550 k3 tank
Post by: Trigger on March 30, 2014, 10:14:19 PM
It is official known as a strainer. On the two out let tap you have a gauze in the tap and a strainer over the fuel straw. On the single outlet fuel tap it only has a strainer.
Could be still in the tank as mick said, or someone removed it before.

Sorry If I misled anyone. I have a strainer in my kitchen cupboard.   ;D

is this gauze meant to be inside the tube, nothing in there

could I not just put in a inline fuel filter between tank and carbs ?

there is some tiny bits of rust still in tank but a lot fell out while washing

If that white piece you have is just a plastic tube then the "strainer" is missing.
The strainer is the white part you see in the two pictures I posted.

As mentioned, the strainer envelopes the tube. The tube is the "main" tank, the petrol tap has another hole in it at "ground level" to let the remaining fuel out.

well the strainer is in the tank and looks to be settled in nicely. just sticking out of hole

hardly any rust in tank and what looks like bare white metal  around the top of tank

been washed out ...... good to use ?
