What is going on with Hammerite?! I used to find it the stuff to use for a quick, thick coating of tough gloss black.
They seem to have changed the formula though. The last couple of cans I have had been next to useless.
It is so thin you need at least 5 coats on everything. Is is so runny it moves away from peaks and edges. And it takes forever to dry. I put a couple of coats on some small bits for eBay yesterday evening. Still very sticky this morning >:(.

Totally agree. It's now absolute sh#te !! >:(
Kenny.

I have used it on various parts and have to agree sh*t now.
Anyone recommend a alternative !!
-
Thanks for the feedback. At least it's not just me and unfortunately, not just a couple of cans.
-
Now thats a pity good shit normally
Cheers

Yes, it is crap. More thinner than paint inside a spray can.
-
It stays soft for about 6 months, absolute shyte

I've sent a complaint to Hammerite ;). I'm currently trying a Hammerite substitute from B&Q called Multi-purpose Colours. Seems much better so far.
-
I use rustoleum it now takes a wile to go off but it lasts better than hammerite and it's nicer to use to.

Unfortunately it's the EU poking their nose into British affairs again. Brussels has decided that the solvents in the original formula hammerite/smoothrite are too dangerous for us mere mortals to handle, plus they didn't like the percentage of volatile organic compounds in it, and it's not just this paint they're ruining, many household paints have had to change formulation to comply with the new regs, even good old UHU modellers glue has had to change and is now c**p. So no good complaining to the paint manufacturers, it's Brussels and it's poxy meddling. Incidentally, these are the same morons who decided fuel should contain an ever increasing amount of rubber eating paint stripping ethanol :o >:(

I'm a decorator by trade and can honestly say all paints are now complete crap it causes no end of problems for me.

Are yes Green1. I did my clocks with black satin rustoleum. That seems quite thick and the nozzel blocked easily. Expensive at £11 a tin too, but did leave a good finish.
-
Heat the can in hot water for a wile and it will spray much better.
Unfortunately it's another case of you get what you pay for.
-
Go along totally with the Hammerite comments, used it this week for the first time in years, small parts i stripped from the bike last weekend ,thought it was me not shaking the can long enough, after 10 mins, the same, rubbish now.
I'll try the other recommendations.

Did you ever try jap black enamel paint?
Very good finish and you can paint it on,doesn't seem to run either.
-
What a shame,a great product ruined !!
I always thought it was great, now rubbish ,thats progress, and Health n Safety

do these problems occur with the brush on version?

do these problems occur with the brush on version?
Don't know .... I was going to ask the same question as I have a 5 litre tin of black (purchased about 5 years ago) waiting for my CB250K0 frame, which needs thinning with 1 part thinners to spray. I think the thinners is also described on the tin as being brush cleaner too. There is a HS Data sheet on it on the Net, from a few years ago, so if they don't sell the correct stuff any more, can always concoct something similar.
Cheers... AshD

I think the brush on version is thinner than it used to be, but still quite usable.

I've just used brush-on smooth satin black,on brake disc centre.
It's good stuff. :
