Title: Exhaust screw removal. Best idea
Post by: El__burro on May 15, 2014, 10:34:59 PM
I am about to deal with removing damaged screw to remove the exhaust from the header.
So far I have managed to remove 3 out of 8 (almost easily).

I have now 5 damaged screw to remove, what is the best way to do this?

Thanks

I would suggest weld a nut on the stud and undo, if you can soak the unit in diesel or similar, it may also help before you undo?
hope this helps

I've used on a stud extractor to good effect to get stubborn studs out :

but ... do you really need to get the studs out to remove the exhaust .... rather than just removing the nuts from the studs ?

If you have enough good thread to get 2 nuts on the same stud you can tighten one nut against the other and the turn the nut closest the engine anti clockwise, applying heat and penetrating oil to the stud may also help, obviously you risk shearing the stud or the thread on the casting, so if you don't absolutely have to remove the studs just leave them, there is less to go wrong that way!  :)
