Hi. Bit of advice required if somebody could oblige. Am about to change the head race bearings on my 750F2 for taper bearings. Have bought a set that has the two races (fairly obvious which is top and bottom due to the different sizes). My kit also came with a large steel washer. Does anybody know where this washer goes. I assume it's there to build up the stack height to match the original ball races. My guess is that it goes underneath the bottom race on the yokes, but it is only a guess. Help Ta.

I wouldn't swear to it being correct, but I fitted mine to the top of the upper bearing, where the adjusting nut contacts it, mine came with no instructions, but 15 years later still works fine. ;D

Hi,
don't know about the 750's, but it goes on the bottom of the yoke stem on the 400/4, it stops the bottom yoke "catching" the frame bottom bearing housing area.---ken

It is known as a steering washer and it goes on the bottom of the stem. Then it is the rubber dust seal and so on.

The frame I have got has which I can not believe has all the races removed. In your opinion do I go for tapers or the bog standard?I have no problems with the standard stuff only asking because never fitted the later.
Cheers

Bitsa, your choice, your bike. If standard bearings are fitted and the cups are OK, i just fit another set of ball bearings. But, in this case i would go for a taper set.

Thanks for that info Trigger. Is it absolutely essential to fit the dust seals with taper rollers as I don't have any, and non were supplied with the kit. Cheers.
-
Not all kits come with the dust seal. It is just fitted to stop road dirt and water going into the lower roller. If you pop along to your plumbing shop with the washer and ask if they have a rubber washer around that size. I think the last one i got was a little bigger, so just trimmed it to size. But, not essential.

Norniron, there was nothing wrong with your cups on the old ones. Boy racers have to have boy racer bearings ;)
-
I'm a bit old to be a boy racer, only ever touched 90 once on a bike
the road looks too hard at that speed ;D
-
When i was on about boy racer i mean boy cafe racer. 90 mph? I had a hayabusa with a nice Turbo fitted, at 210 the sweeping curves on the dual carriageway get a little tight :) Sold it before i pushed it too far.
-
210 bloody hell my backside wouldn't cope with that. :o

knew it and never meet you mad git

I will keep quite on my top speed then ;) It was a bit over 210

Just got some seals for the taper bearings. They are not what I expected really and now I am not too sure where they go. The seal is like a U shape that looks like the spacer washer goes inside it. It that correct? If it is correct, that would mean the front end of the bike is supported on the rubber seal, or am i missing something. Cheers.
-
This seal is only a dust seal. You put the big washer on the stem first than the dust seal. The front end is supported by the bearings not the dust seal.
-
Thanks for the reply Trigger. Will give that a go. Was just concerned that this rubber seal will be trapped between the spacer and the bearing, making setting the bearing play a bit hit and miss. What I was expecting to receive was the older type seal with the steel inner like the ones supplied in the Allballs kit. Never mind will give it a go. Cheers.
-
I have seen them the other way round as well, with the seal on first then the washer. As you tighten it up the seal wraps round the washer but, the seal needs to be a bigger OD dia than the washer for that to happen.

This might help, Installation instructions from Allballsracing.com

Great
Nice name though

Yep sure enough, put the front together and the whole weight of the bikes front is on the rubber dust seal as its trapped between the spacer washer and the bearing. That surely cant be right. Can it? Anybody know where I can get seals like the ones in the Allballs kit. Thanks.

might be worth contacting the people that RGP750 suggested?

Okay sorted it. If anybody requires the correct seal the DSS part number is FDCBE-371-010P (Honda part number 53214-371-010). They are £2.95p plus the usual unbelievable postage charge. These are the ones with the steel centre core that the bearing sits on, with the rubber outer seal bonded to it. Cheers all and thanks for all your help and suggestions.
